are there new cameras on the market that just take photos? I've been in the market for a new camera, purchased a Nikon D780, Very pleased with it but why waste all the software on movies? Is there a camera on the market without the movie package?

Nikon Df. Have one and much enjoy it. Even discontinued, not inexpensive.

I also have the Nikon Df which I love but..... I paid extra to have no movies. So a camera without video capability is more expensive than one that does. You would ask why? Because all cameras now are either mirrorless which have an EVF or at least a live view LCD. All DSLR's also have live view mode. With live view mode adding the video functionality cost very little but if you remove the feature the sales is going down a lot and thus making the unit cost a lot higher.

I also purchased the D780 and have not lost one bit of software or memory to video. However, there are times it could come in handy so I am glad it is there. I like having something that can cover all aspects of photography should I have a need for it.

Just don't use it.

While I realize some people are willing to actually pay more to get a Nikon Df because they don't want video, camera manufacturers include it because it is only software and adds very little to the cost of the camera, and some people do want it. It wouldn't be cost effective to offer models with and without video.

It may actually ADD to the cost, because the engineers would need to design an entirely new circuitry from scratch, void of all video components. Or they can simply disable the already existing video circuitry - which is essentially like buying a camera which capabilities have been intentionally crippled the manufacturer.

A much easier approach for the consumer is to simply don't use the video feature. I certainly don't feel the need to utilize every single feature on the camera just because it is there. But sometimes it is good to know that they are there, just in case a unique situation arises.

Would you try to buy a car without A/C? You don't pay extra for the video capabilities. You pay more for the maybe one modern camera that doesn't have video, or a whole lot more for a larger medium format camera.

I didn't get the Df because of what it didn't have, but because it could make use of any one of a large collection of fine old Nikon lenses. That said, I have never used the video capability of any of my video capable digital cameras. Not of interest and I'd need to consult a manual in the unlikely event I cared to do a video sequence. As a matter of fact, I did buy a truck without A/C - a classic.

The good news is that you can program the button with the red dot to do things other than shoot movies.
