I have always been fascinated by Steam Engines and on rare occasions I have been able to take a few pictures. I know that there are several “Photo Tours” where people are able to take staged and other photos of Steam Engines and other trains. However I have never found a website which has an active list of upcoming tours. Does anyone know of a website, or Facebook site that has this information?

The B&O museum in Baltimore has some prototype steam engines including the submissions to a contest that includes a steam turbine prototype from around 1832, 50-60 years before the steam turbine was officially invented. You can see the progression in the train engines from the Tom Thumb until the advent of combustion and electric engines up close and personal in the massive roundhouse and in the yard. I know that you asked for a tour, but if you’re on the east coast and love steam engines it’s worth a visit.

Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railroad / Reading and Northern RR in PA..//. Cass Scenic RR in WV - st Cass, you can camp in the mountains in a caboose. Then Ely, Nevada for the Nevada Northern. And lots more around. Cumbres and Toltec in southern Colorado, 64 mile trip.

There is one in Cumberland, MD that runs in fall and maybe spring thru the mountains to Frostburg. They have just finished refurb, or about to, what will be the largest running locomotive in the country they say. Unfortunately, they have just determined all the ties must be replaced on the tracks at several million they don't have, so do not know when it may run again.

The roundhouse of steam in ohio I believe it is called. A major great place to visit. Up around Canton

Here's one I forgot for my previous post.

The Allegheny Portage Railroad in Gallitzen, Pa.
It's not steam, but keep it in mind. Before Horseshoe Curve was built there was no Railroad across the Allegheny Mountains. Passengers road trains from Pittsburgh or Philadelphia then were put in gondolas to be carried over the Alleghenys on a series of portage inclines. once they reached the other side they resumed their trip by rail.

Heber Valley Railroad transverses Provo Canyon in northern Utah. It’s a pretty ride with views of Mt Timpanogos. The rest mentioned above are great. I haven’t been to Altoona, but everything else, we’ve visited. The national railroad museum was Pork at its best with Senator Spectre going up against Senator Barbara McCulskie from Baltimore. The B&O in Baltimore lost but may still have the most trains. The dynamic exhibits at the national museum are a lot of fun and are well worth a visit.

Have you considered taking the Silverton/Durango on a real steam engine. The scenery and photo ops are magnificent.

California State Railroad Muesum along with the Union Pacific Historical Society can also help you out if you like to take photos of Western Railroads. Kansas City Kansas has a Railroad Muesum.

St. Louis, MO and also in Chicago area is the Illinois Railroad Muesum which has Railroad Locomotives, Rolling stock along with Trolleys and PCC equipment from various Railroads in the nation. ILM is worth the trip when you are in the Chicago area.
