I shoot with the Nikon D600, and love it. My telephoto lens is the Nikon 200-500mm lens, an awesome lens. I am thinking of getting a teleconverter, but not sure if I would be better off with the Nikon 1.7x or the Nikon 1.4x, so looking for advice on which one to choose. I appreciate any advice given, thank you in advance. I mainly shoot wildlife (birds) and landscape. I don't expect to use the lens plus teleconverter much in landscape sghots, so mainly be using it for wildlife photography.

The 1.4x will bring your maximum aperture to f/8.0. If your camera will auto focus at that aperture, go for it.
You would probably have auto focus issues with the 1.7x.

I use the TC-14 E II with the AF S Nikkor 200-500 5.6 E ED on my D7200. It works so well in that combo I haven't tried it on one of my FX cameras. I get a usable top end of 1050 (35mm equivalent) The TC-14 E III is supposed to be slightly better.

Page 287 of your D600 user manual explains the camera's support for f/8 for auto-focus. You don't have an option of adding more than 1-stop to your f/5.6 lens.

Have the d810 the 200-500 and the tc-14e II works well with ample light. Don’t think the 1.7 would work with the 200-500 very well.

Sharpest results are from a fixed focal length lens.
The next sharpest results come from a low, fast, telephoto like a 300 2.8 lens.
The next sharpest results come from a fixed slower telephoto like a 500mm 5.6 lens.
The next sharpest results come from a low, fast zoom like a 24-70 f2.8.
The next sharpest results come from a fast zoom like a 200-400 f4.
The next sharpest results come from a fast fixed focal length telephoto with a 1.4 teleconverter.
The next sharpest results come from a fast fixed focal length telephoto with a 1.7 teleconverter.
The next sharpest results come from a fast zoom telephoto with a 1.4 teleconverter.
The next sharpest results come from a fast zoom telephoto with a 1.7 teleconverter.
The next sharpest results come from a slower zoom telephoto lens. (200-500)
The next sharpest results come from a slower zoom telephoto with a 1.4 teleconverter. (200-500)
The next sharpest results come from a slower zoom telephoto with a 1.7 teleconverter. (200-500)
The next sharpest results come from a slow telephoto zoom like a 150-600 6.3.
The next sharpest results come from a slow telephoto zoom like a 150-600 6.3 with a 1.4 teleconverter.
The next sharpest results come from a slow telephoto zoom like a 150-600 6.3 with a 1.7 teleconverter.

I hope this helps you make your decision.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Tele's typically work best on primes, not zooms.
You can use them on some zooms, but they need to be extremely sharp zooms (think white lenses) with fast apertures.
You take a sharpness hit no matter what...you take an AF hit no matter what.

That being said...1.4 will do better than 1.7 ... no matter what.

AF will be your issue in either case , 1.7 having the greater impact - if you get AF at all ...

Everybody has a different idea which is acceptable for their use . I just sent back a Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III on My D810 with the same lens you are speaking of . I didn't feel the softness was worth the work needed to get the images I was used to without it . With the TC it pushes your ISO above the noise level I found acceptable in the final product . Even with a lot of luminance and balancing sharpness in ACR I was not happy with the results just to get to 750 mm .. You also lose way to many active auto focus points . I have now committed to a nikon D500 to get the reach I need for eagles and such .. Having watched Steve Perry's and his testing of what you are about to do . He proved to Me that a TC should be reserved to Prime lenses and that a D500 was better choice Than My D810 or any Full frame camera with a TC on a zoom lens ... Now a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR with a TC that is something different but way out of My budget for now. P.S. I was shooting @ 1/1600 sec f9 Auto ISO up to ISO 2000 for birds in flight . Noise was the problem when upsizing to 24" x 36" images ...if only 8 x 10 or even 13 x 19 maybe acceptable to some .

Hmmm ... wouldn't that have something to do with the amount of light available, and the shutter speed you are using?

The lens is awesome now. Put a 1.4 TC on it and you will likely change your opinion. It will be slower to focus, you will give up some image quality, you can forget about hand-holding, and it will be useless in low contrast light - when many birds and wildlife tend to be out. Unfortunately, the alternative will be considerably more expensive.

This will tell you everything you want to know.

Could not have been brighter miday full sun ...a few clouds , floating the ISO allows for the camera to adjust for changing light .ISO 2000 was my upper limit not where the image was necessarily the final setting . The ISO needs to go up for any given rise in shutter speed . If I shoot in Shutter priority instead of Manual Mode the camera by design tries to force a f7.1 sometime shooting a large bird with full wing spread I need f 9 to get a sharper image . So the camera only has one choice that is @ ISO at f9 or f11 where I tend to shoot it has to Honor 1/1600 always forcing a higher ISO . In low light it is worst ...so forget early morning or late evening ..for me just not enough sharpness for me .This Image of pelicans with the 1.4 TC just lacks the detail I want ...when printed to 48"...This image of the osprey is uncropped and cropped and took way to much work to get here ..and to me could be better with a crop sensor body giving Me the 750mm instead of 700mm ...all images shot with the TC on the 200-500

The local Camera shop where I bought my tele converter told me that in very few cases would they ever recommend the 1.7 tele. I took their advice and could not be happier
Need to mention I use this on a Sigma 150-600 contemporary with a Nikon DSLR 7100
