The Ladybug is one of those insects that most children can easily identify and watch with wonder as they crawl on their hand.

Well, I wonder if they would think of them in this Ladybug nymph stage the same way. These look more like a dragon than they do the bright red polka dotted insect of the nursery rhyme fame.

Thanks, and what is even more fascinating is how the larvae pupates and transform from the nymph to the adult. This is one that I found held fast to a leaf that was in the process of doing just that. It was quite a rare find.

This was a focus stacked session that consisted of 291 images taken at increments of 15-micrometers via a digital motorized focus rail with a little Fujifilm X-T20 mirrorless camera utilizing an industrial 5X-power microscope objective mounted on a bellows.

I set the ISO to be fixed at 200 and there is no aperture setting on a microscope objective so it is shot full open. The shutter speed is adjusted up or down as I watch the histogram to center with a bit to the left (dark).

My illumination is constant LED lamps that I shine onto two layers of vellum tracing paper placed on the lens like a lens hood with the subject under it which creates a soft enveloping tunnel of light. The subject is pinned into plasticine modeling clay that is set on top of a mirror. The mirror reflects the soft light onto the underside of the subject to avoid dark undersides.
