A milkweed pod just opened and the first seeds starting to hang out ready to drop and blow away on the wind. The breeze had picked up a little and this milkweed plant was in the shade of my west fence so I needed a higher shutter speed for the motion and a higher ISO and wider aperture to make up for the dim light. The white fluff had a bit of backlighting from sun on a wall in the distance.

If you have the capability, take them inside and photograph them as it opens more and more. It's a gem of a show by nature. I have a series of Milkwood pods opening, some of my favorite images.

Puts me in mind of shibumi (Japanese): simple subdued elegance.

Hmmm? Which one of the couple of hundred pods in my yard do I pick? This one, one not yet opened, one almost empty, an empty one - I have multiples of each in the yard.

Enjoy yours. It is now time for the birds to be gathering the fluff to line nests. I will be on the lookout to get more/better pictures. I don't have a real sharp one of a hummer gathering fluff - the little buggers were moving too fast.

Isolate the subject and leave off the rest.
