I need some guidance on a flash trigger for my D500 and SB-700 flash. I made the mistake of purchasing an Altura wireless flash trigger set thinking it would work with my combination. I tried everything I could think of without success. I would love to hear the hogs set me straight on what I need to wirelessly trigger my SB-700 from my D500. I would like to have radio triggers.

Thanks.

I have pocket wizards that work well with my Nikon gear.

I had a set of Phottix Odin transmitter and receivers that were rock-solid performers.
I’ve moved to Godox now and those have worked great for me. With the exception of my Nikon SB-5000, all my lights are Godox (Flashpoint at Adorama) have built in radio receivers and all work really well.

I use the Pocket Wizard Flex system with AC3 controllers for ETTL and manual power control. I like this system because I can control three groups in manual or ETTL or mixed grouping. I know there are other systems out there, but I got started with a used set of triggers and 2 EX580II flashes with converted interference shields. The beauty with Pocket Wizards are they are backward and forward compatible and I can incorporate my Alien Bees into the system. So as I add to my receivers, everything works together and everything I have can be software upgradeable.

I do use Pixel Soldiers I had before the PW's that are also group controllable but in manual mode only. I use these for off brand flashes when I still need to add fill lighting on a shoot.

I have used Pocket Wizards at work and they are amazing, but I actually use the Photix Odin set also. A great value for the money, and they work for my speedlights and I can use them on my really old Novatron Strobes to shoot wireless at home. I just purchased a third receiver for the Odin set , Used, from Used Photo Pro. They are affordable and reliable.

I tried godex/ flashpoint and it wasn’t a 100% result of trigger the Nikon flash. I would get a other Nikon flash on camera and use it as trigger. I believe the 500 doesn’t have a built in flash what could be used as trigger.
I changed to flashpoint because I knew I needed more lights

It depends if you are looking for a simple trigger or one that can provide iTTL. Pocket Wizards are the pro's choice and for good reason - they just work as advertised. However I've gotten excellent service from Yongnuo triggers - which are a fraction of the price and come in two flavors - basic trigger or ful-blown iTTL. The basic ones are around $38 for a pair of transceivers (RF-603 II), and the iTTL version at $79 for a pair (YN-622 II). The 603 can be used as a wireless remote shutter trigger, and the 622, while forfeiting the shutter trigge feature, can fully integrate with any supported iTTL flash, from Nikon and/or other vendors. It also has an optional commander module, and they fully support FP-Sync. For all intents and purposes they offer the same feature set as the more costly Pocket Wizards.

I think your trigger is fine and the problem is a configuration problem. Did you try to set the pins on the back of the trigger (battery compartment) and on the flash to the same channel? If you do this and it is not running, it may be a faulty drive.

I purchased my first Pocket Wizard system in 1982- they are still in service. Since I have added 5 receivers and a spare transmitter. I use mine for multiple flash setups in the studio and a wide variety of location work- someof it in pretty rough industrial sites. I have never had a misfire or any issues. I've synched with flash units at 2-city blocks away and from different rooms and floors in buildings with metal and concrete walls. Mine is the basic trigger units- no TTL -manual only.

The Yonguno units that Gene recommend are excellent as well. One of my wedding shooters uses them and they are good value for the money.

It looks like I haven't found the correct settings to make this Altura work. I set the flash to manual as per the instructions and set the switches correctly. When I press the test button on top of the receiver the flash fires but when mounted and the shutter is activated on the D500 the flash doesn't fire. I guess I'll just have to play with the settings on the camera until I find the right ones.

Yes, look at the camera settings because the camera overrides the flash settings
