My younger brother passed away 2 years ago from a massive heart attack. His widow has slowly gotten things such as services and bank accounts moved to her name. Recently she decided that she wanted to drop the cablevision portion of her xfinity (Comcast) subscription. She wants to keep the internet and phone portion. The service is in my brother’s name. When she called xfinity she was told that she could not make any changes to the account because it was in her husband’s name only. She explained that he had passed away two years ago. She was then told that she could print a form from their website, complete it, and mail it along with a copy of the death certificate, which she did. Ten days later she got an email from xfinity stating that they had received the form and the certificate. However, they were unable to complete the request because the person who owns the account (her deceased husband) did not sign the form.

She needs to contact State authorities for help. Her State might have some applicable law. She should put a freeze on the bank auto debit. Her bank can be helpful with this. She should write up her experience and pass it around Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Yee gods. Putting a freeze on the auto debit would seem a legitimate step, but then that might trigger late payment charges. Try to talk to a human being on the other end of the line.

She does not use auto debit. She pays when she receives the bill each month.

So, stop paying in his name and start an account in her own name with just what she wants.

Sounds like prime candidates for some school board or even college professors somewhere. I would recommend politics but most of those slots are taken up by people even dumber. But they look good and can convince people to vote for them.

Just stop paying the bill, if it's only in the husbands name they will eventually shut the service off. She made enough of an effort already!

The late payment charges would be against her deceased husband, not her. I doubt he'll send them the payment.

Nothing in the world harder to get rid of than Cable; except Sirius radio.

These companies do this ALL THE TIME. She should just stop paying the bill. She should keep any correspondence they sent in case she wants to show it later. If the only person they want to deal with later is dead. let them. They already bullyed her into 2 years of paying for stuff she didn’t want. I guess they could go after HIS credit rating.

She needs to close out whatever account the monthly payment is coming from and start over with someone else. When the payments stop, they will be happy to cancel! I have 4 or 5 automatic payments - when I retire, rather than deal with trying to cancel them, I am just going to close out the checking account and start a new one...

I'm reminded of an experience with Comcast my friend had in Whittier CA (near LA) some years back - a tree fell and dropped the phone and cable lines to his house. He contacted them and was told he needed to go online to go online to enter a service request. When he explained the reason he was calling was because the line was down and he had no internet connection he was met with dumbfounded silence.

I never thought I was an exceptionally intelligent person, UNTIL I went to work for a very large company and could not believe the lack of logic in the people in the higher echelons that made the rules and regs that we were supposed to work with AND around. There are very few people, apparently, who can look at a problem from different angles and realize where the problem could become a non-problem. Generally, I just skip over the ones at the bottom of the totem pole, find out who the CEO is and start at the top with my letter explaining my problem and why it occurred because of THEIR problem.

If you know your husbands sign on credentials, you should be able to change your service without talking to anyone. Otherwise dynamite works wonders.😜 (Just kidding)

First, she pays the bill by check each month. Secondly, she only wants to drop the cablevision part of the service. She wants to keep the internet and phone. The problem is that the service is in her late husband's name. The objective is to get the service in her name so that she can make changes to it.
