I have starting thinking about possibly saving for a "run" at purchasing the new Olympus 150-400 f4.5 Pro IS X1.25. I'm going to have more than enough time to think about it as it turns out. The actual sales are 300% over the expected sales even at the $7500 price tag. If I order one right now, it turns out that that it will not be delivered before this time next year, or possibly even later. I wonder how long it would take to get one if I would order one around Christmas. It could be two years or more before I could even get one.

Your spending time here while you should be placing your order.

I saw that report or something similar about the demand for that lens. There are few in the hands of ordinary users but the pictures have looked great. I use the Olympus system but am not sure if I want to put that sort of money down. You would need to get the E-M1X or its rumored successor to make few use of its capability combined with bird AF. The weight of the E-M1X and 150-400 lens is 100.8 oz (6.3 #). The weight of the Nikon D500, 200-500 and 1.4 TC is 119.3 oz (7.45#). The Olympus setup is lighter by over a pound but the cost (new) will be over $9500 whereas the Nikon setup new is $3388. If I got really interested in shooting wildlife, I would get the Nikon setup. An alternative of using a Sony setup (A9 + 200-600 G lens+ 1.4TC ) will weigh 7.0# (112 oz) and cost $5444. Not sure if saving a pound is worth the extra cost.

One could order now and always back out.

But the Olympus angle of view is 300-800 f4.5 and 375-1000 f5.6 (with the 1.25X internal teleconverter on) in 35mm terms. It then becomes 420-1120 f6.5 and 525-1400 f8 (with internal teleconverter on) and the external X1.4 teleconverter. With the X2 external teleconverter, the lens becomes 600-1600 f9 and 750-2000 f11 (with internal teleconverter on). All of this is is handholdable. How many handholdable full frame zoom lenses are there that are capable of covering 300mm to 2000mm, at under 12.5" in length (under 14" with teleconverter) and 4 pounds, for $7500? And all the above at 1 pound less, no tripod needed, for only $2100 more than the most expensive closest system to that zoom range. Don't get me wrong; I would love to have a Sony full frame system to complement my Olympus system. I just do not have enough money to match my Olympus system in coverage. Just trying to match my 300 f4 lens to the Canon and Nikon 600 f4 would cost me either $9500 or $12K. And it still would not travel like my Olympus system. My ideal Olympus system would be 14mm to 2000mm in angle of view, flashes, batteries, filters, viewsight EE-1, and other accessories, packed in about a 8x15x20 backpack, and under 20 pounds total. I know of no other system that can do that. This is why the serious consideration for such a lens for my retirement and travels.

How about using an adapted lens. I use a Nikkor 200mm F4 lens on my micro fourr third cameras.

Supply and Demand. If the Demand is High and the Supply is low, that is the ideal point of sales position. Good luck.

That works until folks get tired of waiting and switch brands.

I put an order in with B&H back in November. So far, I have heard nothing. I am currently using the 100-400mm f5-6.3 lens on the MX1 with satisfactory results.

Could be just a supply chain issue that will clear up. Canon can't keep up with demand for a number of products lately including their "big whites" which are all back ordered not to mention the R5. IIRC you can get on a list at B&H and they will notify you when one becomes available. I'll bet others will too. Of course, putting money down might get you one quicker.

This sounds fishy for a camera that probably won't be around in a couple of years.

For that kind of $$$'s you could buy a Sony A7 III, FE 200-600 and 1.4x TC and have money left over to chase that wildlife! I can't image the Olympus 150-400 is really worth $7,500!?

I ordered from B&H the day it was announced. Still no word, but I understand some have shipped. Almost afraid to call B&H to ask where I am in line.

I'm selling all my long Nikon glass to help pay for it, and an Oly 300 f/4 Pro. Will sell the 100-400 if I ever get the new lens.

Considering the topic of this thread, I'm not sure that's the case. As long as I may be waiting, It's good to know of the success oif this lens.
