Looks like Nikon is very heavily invested in the new sensor technology. A 1inch square 17 million pixel stacked cmos sensor that allows 1000fps 4k image capture. Now we wait to see what they put it in.

This would make an outstanding industrial diagnostic camera like the ones Olympus used to make. Ideal for identifying problems with complex mechanical equipment and systems. We had one at the plant where I worked, absent the HDR capability. I'd have loved to have had a camera built around this chip when I was working there.

It's the 1 inch sensor which is not either 1 inch square nor any of its dimension is 1 in.

I can't see putting a 1" sensor into a smartphone. Way too large.

Panasonic has already done it.

Makes a pretty thick phone.
Personally I'm happy with the camera in my iPhone. The phone fits in my pocket with other things. Doesn't take up all the space.

It does, but smartphones are using bigger and bigger sensors.
The new sensor could go into a compact perhaps...and/or med equipment...Nikon's bread and butter.
