Nikon Z6 II and Travel Lenses

I presently have a Nikon D750 and the following Tamron lenses: a Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 G2, a Tamron 70-200 F/2.8 G2, and a Tamron 17-35 F/2.8-4. All will work with the Nikon FTZ Adapter. I’m planning to buy a Nikon Z6 II or a Nikon Z7 II so I can lighten the load for travel. I was thinking about buying the Nikon 24-200 Z lens as a walk around lens. My Tamron 17-35 is light and that will fill out the lower end. Any recommendations on adding a low light Z prime to compliment this setup (35mm, 50mm).

Thanks for your help!

Mike

I have found, when traveling, that if I bring multiple lenses, I end up only using one 95% of the time. A Z7II with the 24-200 will handle the vast majority of shooting situations. For an additional prime, look at the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S Lens if you are looking for a low light solution.

I think that 50mm f1.8 might be my next Z lens. That said, I *really* like the 14-30 f4, even for low light. A buddy bought the 24-200 and loves it, but I sickly went for the 70-200 f2.8 (which is magic) but for your travel, and the lightness factor, the 24-200 seems like it'll fill the bill. I own a Z6II and love it...I'm sure the Z7II is great, too, but if you want to do vids, the Z6II is da bomb.

Yes, the following lens is the only one you will need.

Mike...I’m making the same sort of determination...although I’ve decided to wait a bit and see if we see a more fully featured DX Z first. Otherwise I think I will get the 7II and 24-200 as you have. For wide, I will probably start with my DX only 10-20 Sigma and see if I need anything wider. That will set the 7II to DX mode but that’s still 19MP...and for that wide the extra MP probably isn’t really needed.

I can second that the 24mm-200mm is a great travel/walkaround lens. Combining that with the 14mm-30mm f4 is a relatively light kit that covers 14mm-200mm.

I have traveled in Europe and across America. My most used lens is the Nikon 24-85. It has worked well everyplace I have gone on my Nikon D800.

I mean no disrespect but what are Travel lenses? Yes I know what you mean but wouldn’t every place in the world be just about the same for photo opportunities? Unless you are specifically looking at a particular type of photography such as birding wouldn’t just one lens fill your needs? As for a prime lens what range are you thinking; 35, 50mm? Wouldn’t those mm’s fit either of your two lens ranges mentioned? From doing a bit of past traveling I have gone from one camera and a bag of lenses to two cameras and four lenses (just in case) to one camera and one do all lens. It has worked great for me. Again, I am simply offering an alternative.

Hi Mike,

The 24-200 F/4-6.3 as a walk around lens is probably fine - depending on how and what you shoot.

If you wait, later this year they are supposed to be releasing the 24-105 F/2.8-4 - a much faster lens and also an S line lens which will have better IQ for sure.

Not sure if you care about that for travel, but as you have the Tamron 24-70 and 70-200 G2 lenses which are very high quality, I thought you might and the 24-105 2.8-4 will likely smoke the 24-200 4-6.3 as long as you don't need the 105-200 range that much - but for walking around, I'm not sure you do.

As far as primes go for the Z, you cannot go wrong with the 50mm 1.8 S - it has Zeiss level IQ and is only $500 or so. The 35mm 1.8 S is also excellent but just a little less impressive than the 50 - still awesome though - it is more $ - something like $800ish. You really cannot go wrong with either - just depends which focal length you use more - personally I have both.

Hope this helps :)

I travel with the Nikkor Z 24-70 f/2.8 + Z7 ii for landscape and city photos. For me, a “travel kit” is one camera and one lens along with my iPhone 11 Pro Max. For me, that’s traveling “light.”

Thanks. My Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 G2 is on my camera most of the time during my recent trips. I love the new Z series 24-70 F/2.8. I know it is expensive and more weight but the reviews across all focal lengths has been spectacular. If I pick up the 24-200 and 50mm 1.8, the total price will be around $1300. If I wait for Nikon sale, I may be able to grab the Z 24-70 F/2.8 for about $1999 (which it was several months ago). I heard the lens is so good you really won’t need any primes in that range.

Thanks for your help!
