I will be in Lynchburg VA for about a week. I will have some free time for a few afternoons/evenings. Does anyone have any ideas of good photo ops? Ever been there and know of someplace I shouldnt miss. I imaging the mountains are gorgeous but looking for good vantage points and any tips!

A beautiful drive would be to take 501 north. Over the mountain at Eagle Eyrie (on the right, at the top) and down the other side is bee-U-tiful!

Drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Peaks of the Outer (Take 221 to Bedford and 43 to the Blue Ridge Parkway). Sharp Top mountain is a nice hike and good views. There's a bus that'll take you up too - if you are not up to a strenuous hike (check for seasonal schedule). A few miles north of where Rte 43 reaches the Blue Ridge Parkway is the Falling Water Cascade loop. It's only about 2000 feet to the top to cascade, and quite a nice view. You can then follow the BRP north to 501 - mentioned in a previous post - and take that back to Lynchburg. It's a nice drive with several nice turnoffs for photo opps. There's a nice restaurant for lunch at the Peaks of the Otter.

Also... If you ate into historic old trees. There is a famous oak in Bedford:

skipick picked my brain a bit - ditto to all he said, and while at peaks of otter, there's an old homestead (1700's or 1800's) there you can visit. And that view from the Sharp Top is breathtaking. My wife and I hiked that trail to the top in flipflops when we were just "friends." I do not recommend flipflops!
Also best I can remember, there's some really nice old architecture in town down close to the James River...the older part of town.

The homestead is the old Johnson farm. It's an easy 3/4 mile hike leaving from the parking lot across from the intersection of 43 and the BRP.

Of course, you can also go the other direction - on 460 - and reach Appomattox. If you enjoy civil war historical places, it's a good one. Plenty of photo opportunities there.

And to the north.... Take 29N to 151 to 56 to Crabtree Falls. Beautiful drive and great, short hike. If you hike to the top, it's a little strenuous, but you can view from the platform at the bottom and hike up as far and you want.

If you like trains, there's a nice museum in Roanoke (1 hour west) and you can't go wrong visiting Charlottesville (UVA, Montecello).

My wife is from Lynchburg and I see others have mentioned the Peaks and the Blue Ridge. She mentioned going out to Appromattix, Ft. Early intown. Several old churches in the area. Havent been up there in a few years but there use to be sevaral old buildings along the James River there in town. Would make some good HDR shots if your in to that.
The leaves should be just right so I think no matter where you go it should be good.
