Is it possible to get it SOOC?

Here are two opinions on the subject: what do you think?

The answer is simple, it depends what you want. So the same old arguments apply.

I'll check back on page 10 to see if anything 'new' has been uncovered.

Yes you can. I do both, some SOOC and more PP. I mainly do the SOOC stuff to test myself and my decades old skills learned from film photography. With digital, and the ability to see results instantly, SOOC is not as difficult to do and improve on as it once was.

If Ansel Adams was the photographer worthy of that name, he'd do a better job Straight Out Of Camera like a Real Photographer.

Yes it's possible. It's also possible to win the lottery -- someone just did.

Competent opinions? Seriously?

Exactly! I use them SOOC, even shooting in raw, when I just want a record of how something comes apart or to keep track of how something is coming along. If a picture isn't important, why spend time processing it?

As far as I'm concerned, the most important considerations before clicking the shutter are composition, focus, and exposure. Assuming you have a good subject, if those three things are right, you're almost home.

I know what you mean. Having read and performed the exercises and experiments in his books have ruined my ability to be a real photographer. I have to "fix" every shot I take to make it look close to the scene I was photographing. I need to seriously work on my SOOC skills.

Here's a fun experiment. Using auto-exposure mode with flash turned off in your camera, fill the frame with a solid pure black image (like a black piece of paper) and take a jpg picture. Then, fill the frame with a solid pure white image (like a white piece of paper) and take a jpg picture. Now, compare the two pictures and tell us if one is pure black and the other pure white -- just like what you saw and SOOC.

Probably a thousand threads on this topic here... do a search.

Yes, No, and Maybe are the appropriate answers. It all depends on the situation and what you expect for results.

That's a dumb experiment and unrelated to taking photos SOOC. SOOC doesn't require ignorance of camera meter functioning.

It proves the point that the metering system of any camera has limitations that cannot be "adjusted" out, particularly with respect to contrast and dynamic range. Follow the science...

Metering has nothing to do with contrast and dynamic range. Metering doesn't determine and nor can it alter either. Learn the science.

Not necessarily. One should be aware of how light meters work and the results one is going to get. Here's a thread that covered metering.
