We are going to a car museum on Friday and I ordered this lens for that reason, it arrived this afternoon. I drove around and did some test shots. The first issue of this lens had vignetting that I didn't like, the version II doesn't have any vignetting. I think I am going to like this lens.
Canon 1Ds mk3 (full frame) Canon 16-35 2.8 II
35mm
same camera angle at 16mm. My favorite pic of the day.
sitting about 18 inches from the car at 16mm
standing about 18 inches from the car at 16mm
35mm
from same distance at 16mm
35mm. what you see blurred out is the branch about 3 feet away
The background is a white christmas tree about 18 inches away
I thought the distortion would be noticeable
I've owned this lens close to 10 years now and have been mostly happy with it. They say the v3 is even sharper but I've managed to acquire plenty of very sharp images with it.
From what I can see, none of the pictures are sharp. The 24-70 II that I use gives me pictures that are sharp as a razors edge. Sorry

My 24-70 is pretty sharp too. And sometimes sharpness is overrated. Will see how this lens performs as I begin using it.

So what lens do you use when your 24-70 isn't wide enough in a tight area? I have the 17-40 which is sharp, but its only f4 and I want something faster.
I also shoot with the 17-40 L f:4. This lens is fast enough for what I shoot with it. If I need more light for closer shots I use the light box.
