Forgot to mention. We are warm and dry and healthy. We can pay our bills and buy food. All our kids are healthy and employed. We have become mask experts. Many have it much worse. We got our first COVID shot last week with no hassle. Life is not all the pits.

My parents grew up in the depression. Mom was poor, Dad was well to do, and the contrast was good for me and my sister. We learned the values of education, of paying attention to folks who really know things, of thrift, of capital accumulation, of justice, and reverence for truth.

We feel fortunate to have trusted science from day one. We do what's needed to be safe. My wife and I have saved all our lives for a rainy day, even when it was difficult or we were tempted not to do so. We're doing a bit to help charities with donations of money and things we no longer need.

If I have any advice for my three adult kids, it's to learn from this age of pandemic. Prepare in advance for the unexpected. Save. Invest. Work has dignity, no matter what it is. You need insurance. You need a plan. Play, "What if?" and know what to do if "if" happens. My parents learned those things in the 1930s and WWII era, and they are more valuable than ever.

Really like your question. I am an avid bird watcher and am trying to turn the corner form advanced beginner to an intermediate photograpaher:

Yes, Covid prevented me from all overnight trips. No spring migration photos from the Delmarva or Lake Erie, no overseas trips, no long weekend photo trips. Nevertheless my shooting has increased:
1. Joined this forum and paid some attention to the comments.
2. Changed from jpg to RAW format
3. Purchased and am learning to use a Tamron 150-600 GII lens. Experimented with it at Conowingo dam yesterday, and am also trying to figure out best way to use it for small perching birds. Had success hand holding it shooting a Ruby-crowned Kinglet at Patuxent Research Refuge
4. On a daily basis I send a photo to members of my senior citizens community often taken that day on a daily walk.
5. Have taken more photos of my family and grandchildren resulting in three photobooks where normally would have only produced 1.
6. Have been exchanging ideas with others and experimenting more with the capabilities of my camera, lenses, and software.

Despite all this activity, cannot wait to be able to travel again.

Why wallow in it? Certainly doesn't make sense to me to dredge up and quantify the negatives caused by the panicdemic.

I bought a new camera just before the pandemic in order to facilitate my re-entry into photography after a long hiatus. Unfortunately the pandemic has severely limited the opportunities to re-engage with my former hobby, but hasn't reduced my enthusiasm for doing so as soon as we can resume normal life.

My camera club has resumed the regular meeting schedule, including monthly competition judging; all of it virtual. We have monthly "field trips", but don't travel or shoot together. However, personally my shooting time is way down, and I miss the camaraderie.

Just the opposite about a 20% increase. More time did more landscape, nature, astro, macro. Spent time in the great outdoors away from people. Did have a small down tic in my modeling images because I would not shoot in side

It has cause me to have about 80% decrease compared to a year ago.
Many events that i would attend are no more.
My travel plans have be reduced to 0%.
My airbnb guest has been reduced to 0%.
Overall it has been a bummer.

Yep, that about covers it for me too. I did create a book of my 2019 Africa photos though.

The year has meant a shift into taking images I don't normally approach, like birds and wildlife. There's always something to photograph. I do miss travel photography but it will be back soon enough. This lull has given me the time to work on the technical aspects of post-production, remote control photos of all sorts of things and technique when I am roaming around with nothing on my mind. So much to do, so little time.

Agree with you 100 Percent. My favorite place Chicago Botanical closed. Orchid show cancelled, etc.

A few months ago I drove an hour and a half to one of my favorite places, the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. Beautiful place full of wetland birds and even a bald eagle or two. Well, after driving 70 or 80 miles I got there only to find out it was closed. For what reason? Disappointing.

I've been out once since then to another wildlife area. I was surprised to see it was open and there were a lot of people there. In the past I've only seen one or two other cars out there but the day I went there were probably 20 or more people sitting along the side of the road watching the wetlands birds.

Yeah, it's getting me down. I almost went political but the last time I said what I really felt here the thought police shut me down.

Normally in the summer I do a lot of shooting in parks, zoos, and street photography but in 2020 have done almost zilch - not because I am fearful of the virus but because of the unrest from the early summer (I am in NYC) - worried more about the "crazies". Hopefully this year will be better at least in that regard. If there is a repeat I will likely focus (no pun intended) more on indoor/backyard/macro photography.

Well, I just bought a new full-frame camera and a couple of lenses so if anything I shoot more than before.

I am retired and we are still able to travel within the country (Guatemala) where we live.

We usually rent clean and disinfected airbnb houses where we go and the local population is usually very good wearing masks and dealing with the COVID situation.

Definitely a bummer year. I had to cancel two weeks of island hoping in Greece and would probably have had a trip to Ireland that never even got to the planning stage.
