i have an app on my phone called Sky Candy that attempts to predict the quality of sunrises and sunsets. I haven't found it to be especially accurate...

Another app called MY SUNSET. Picked it up after watching a B&H vid a few days ago. Haven't used it to much or checked out all the features yet. It gives about 5 days of sunset/sunrise predictions on percentage. I have noticed the %'s change all the time as the conditions change. Best to get up a little earlier & check what it says than the night before from what I can tell so far.

Thanks for the info National Park, I'll check it out.

You live close to where you want to shoot? No guarantees, the info & apps mentioned & getting there is the best you can do. Some days are better than others. I live about 10 miles west of Sandy Hook/Gateway NP & watched that sunrise from my balcony & wished my lazy butt went there for it. Here is one from Sandy Hook in July 2017.

Enjoy, Tom

The horizon needs to be somewhat clear to allow light to illuminate whatever clouds are present. I know that when the western sky is clear and there are clouds downwind of the Front Range (over me) then things are setting up for a great show. These conditions are most common here in the fall and winter.

Clouds is the key of course. And then the positioning. Clouds won’t “fire” up until several minutes after the sun goes down below the horizon when it starts to reflect off of them.
It takes lots of observation to read an upcoming “epic” sunset.

There is a web site that maps probability of red rise/set. can't recall all name - try to look it up. If you have no success I'll ask my buddy.

There are a lot of apps that help predict conditions. Some have been mentioned already. Photographers Ephemeris is the one I use most.

use "clear outside " to find times with mostly high clouds. low clouds won't work well. good luck

While going to school in northern Ohio the sunsets became spectacular after the eruption of Mt. St. Helen's. 1979? 1980? Same thing more recently here in New England with the wildfires on the West Coast.

Thanks. I use to use it for planning sun & moon locations but, never cloud cover. Now I use Photo Pills. Mostly for Sun & Moon direction , time & height of them cresting above objects or horizons.
