hobbyist with these slr cameras 4 years: Nikon, Olympus, Sony, & Canon. However, i heard that Nikon is no more now. But Canon is still sprouting? Any ideas on what brand i should stay...

That's more than a bit premature. There have been reports of Nikon not doing well financially. I suspect that's because they're shifting their emphasis towards mirrorless, and that takes considerable investment. Canon mirrorless are getting good reviews but all of the Eos R stuff is pricey, so it'll be interesting to see if their high pricing turns out to be a good policy. Similarly, Sony cameras and lenses get good reviews but they too are pricey. Nikon are producing top level stuff and while I wouldn't call any of it cheap, they're being more restrained with their pricing. I suspect that may turn out to be the better policy, especially as their Z range of lenses grows and becomes more comprehensive. I would recommend Olympus or Panasonic m4/3 only if size and weight are a major issue. The small sensor format comes with limitations that will manifest themselves now and then.

Don’t worry about it. You admit to being a hobbyist. Corporate finance is not your concern. Maintain all four. Update and expand all your systems whenever the budget permits. Don’t “play favorites”. Keep all four as up-to-date as possible.

Up-to-date means “reasonably current”. No need for “cutting edge, state of the art”. Be reasonable. Never be the early adopter but neither be the curmudgeon with truly outdated gear. After all, it’s only a hobby !!!

You ask about a single-brand enhanced learning experience. If that attracts you, I’d recommend your Olympus system. Both m4/3 brands offer many advanced performance features not available in larger cameras. That will give you plenty of learning experience. Also, expanding an m4/3 system is least demanding in terms of space, weight, and cost.

Olympus, not Nikon is a thing of the past. Olympus' new owner has rebranded it as OM Digital Solutions. IMHO the new name doesn't have a chance. Too many words, and if you reduce it to an alliterative acronym it would be ODS, which when you say it out loud, well, it sounds odious.

Anyway, you can't believe everything you read on the internet. Buy whatever camera works for you and be happy, and don't lose any sleep over what "might" happen.

There are rumors that Nikon is in financial trouble. They closed down their operations in Japan & moved all of it to their China facility which I think is a smart move they should of done at least a year ago. I heard something about the warranty time is being reduced also but do not know if it is true or not. If your looking to invest in a new system & this is of concern to you ,,, Canon & Sony are kickin it rite now. Panasonic & Fuji are good also. It is hard to find a camera that takes a bad photo these days. Some just have more features ( which means more menus to go thru but, once it is set up should be no problem) or better high ISO performance, focus tracking for sports & wildlife, etc. Regarding the higher performing cameras, if you don't need that, you could possibly save some money not buying more than you need & use the savings on better performing lens. What kind of photography do you shoot? Are you thinking of a DSLR or Mirrorless camera? Either way , if you purchase new equipment, have fun , Tom

If I were them, I'd use the OM...the brand would be graphicly simple, and a nod to its great ancestor—the OM-1.

Move all of it to their China facility? They moved camera production to Thailand. Don't assume when a Japanese company moves their production out of Japan it goes to China. There are many countries that can make cameras. Most of the Sony cameras are made in Indonesia. All of the Olympus cameras are made in Vietnam. All the Nikon DSLR and Mirrorless cameras are made in Thailand (except the D6 for now).
