eBay payment changes - NO THANKS

Today received an email detailing changes how payments to sellers are handled. I will not sell on eBay any longer. First they require I give them my social security number. They will no longer pay the seller through their PayPal account. Instead eBay will deduct all fees from the amount distributed and then pay the balance directly into the seller's specified bank account - NO LONGER TO A PAYPAL ACCOUNT. NO THANKS. I LIKED KEEP MY SELLER FUNDS SEPARATE FROM OUR HOUSEHOLD ACCOUNT. Final value fees have increased ostensibly to compensate for no longer getting PayPal fees, but in the process I'm sure they are going to make more money through a series of other changes which are not readily apparent to the seller. I'm done with eBay for good. They continue to make changes only to their own benefit. I will continue to buy on eBay but not sell.

Did you contact eBay direct? Not through the message or a phone # in the message? That sounds like someone trying to get your info to gain access to your account(s) so they can rip you off. If your email app shows full return addresses you may find it came from some funky email address

ebay is making more money. The fees in my categories are now 16% to 18%. (vs 20% on walmart.com). This increase only benefits ebay, not the seller or the buyer. They have also hidden the buyer's phone and email address, impeding contact directly with the buyer in many cases.

And with the customer service cutback made worse, after 90 days, sellers can't see buyer information or contact them about a prior purchase.

Big mistake. If you want to kick a company in the nuts, stop doing business with them. The power of the American consumer is to not let them get your money out of your pocket and into theirs. Anyone who does not understand this has no clue about consumer power. And do send them a notice that you are taking your business else where. They actually do listen to this because it is the loose of income.

Perhaps for some items, but for photographic equipment I have had EXCELLENT results selling on the UHH forum and you know it's much safer 'cause you're selling to "family".

Wow, the Social requirement is probably for tax reporting, you know, your income from the sales.....

Another underground economy is garage sales.

Always thought it was funny - one pays a sales tax on purchasing an item, then when you sell it at a later date one is also supposed to report the income from the sale. Funds taxed going out and coming back in.
Someone sold it to you, you sold it to someone. A "transaction" tax I suppose. The "income", which already came in once, is taxed again coming in the "second" time, if they can.

Having had my SSN compromised (apparently by the Experian breach) which caused me a fair amount of pain (you can’t change your SSN) and my checking account number apparently hacked (I no longer write checks unless I know the person) which resulted in an Atlanta apartment complex initiating a $700 transfer from my checking account, I don’t give ANYBODY my SSN or checking acct number, especially EBay. IF it’s a legitimate request (I’d verify), then that would be the end of my EBay selling if I couldn’t do it through PayPal.

Is that why I wasn’t able to get a “request refund” option for a vendor who had sent the wrong item? I suggested that we make the return/refund directly through Paypal and the vendor suggested I was trying to steal the item even though I said I was good at not getting the refund until the tracking service showed it as delivered. She now has a negative review and I have an unwanted item for the KARMS store.

I've always heard we are not required to divulge our SS# to anyone.

Do not divulge your SSN to anyone online or on the phone unless you have verified that you are talking to the SSA or your bank.

If you are not trying to make some money (if not a living) online, the options are limited. ebay's actions now make it less so. Amazon will use you, watch what sells, shut you down before Christmas and then ban you from selling on their site (happened to me). Walmart is still learning, but does not make any effort to learn or ask questions. ebay assumes the cow has millions of teats from which to suck money - If not you, then millions of others. The small business "American dream" of starting and running your own business is in serious jeopardy.

Many other venues have "gone away". And many 'never succeeded' in being successful (bonanza? & others!!!)
And the USPS is encouraging entrepreneurship from third world countries who are enabled to sell direct to the USA (goodbye retailers, flea markets, auctions, etc. as well as importers/wholesalers/distributors and retailers of all descriptions), while underpricing the shipping cost offered to anyone selling in the USA???!!! Who would have thought that the USPS was enemy #1???

So, are you saying that because the USPS has low rates compared to FedX or UPS (for both national and international packages) that they are somehow hurting American entrepreneurs (who have to ship products also). Please explain to me how that discriminates against American small business.

The USPS allows a 'novice' seller in China and other countries to post listings for items they do not stock. When they make a sale, they go nearby and get the item, put it in a piece of plastic or paper and put that in something big enough for a label to go on the outside. They ship it to a 'freight consolidator' who puts this envelope or package in a sea freight container. The loaded container is put on a ship, destination - a sea port in the USA. When the container arrives in the USA, it is put on a trailer and hauled to a USPS distribution center where the contents are sorted by address. The USPS delivers the item to the residence of the USA purchaser. I have seen items sold from China for $ 0.99 including free shipping. (The seller is buying the item, paying seller fees/commissions, packing it, shipping the item to the USA via the USPS and still making a 'profit' at a selling price as low as $ 0.99.)

It costs me $ 3+ to $4+ to ship a package from a USA address to a USA address. I cannot compete with Chinese (or other foreign sellers) who get a 'sweet' deal from the USPS that is not available to USA based sellers.

The things with fantastic low prices sold on ebay, amazon, etc. are coming from China and will come from other countries at the same low shipping costs. This destroys all levels of retail sellers within the USA.

Several years ago I contacted a Chinese factory to buy a simple 'bangle bracelet' - a fashion jewelry item to sell in quantity at a low price. The factory replied with 11 different prices for the same item, depending upon the quality I was willing to purchase! When you see something 'cheap' on ebay or amazon and you buy it, if you aren't happy when it arrives, you complain to get your money back - or you simply throw it away and forget about it. (The cost to ship a return from the USA to China will be many times the value of the item.)

Think about that if you look for 'cheap' items supplied by foreign sellers. ebay and amazon and walmart encourage a competition for visibility of item listings based upon price, not quality. Whoever wins the 'selling price war' can do it with a slightly or greatly lower quality item that costs them less.

I could give many more examples, up to and including "military grade" (supposedly made to "mil-spec" requirements) repair and replacement items. Or drugs, cosmetics, baby formula, etc. You forgot about the baby formula shipped direct from China that contained a cheaper carcinogen to thicken the milk instead of the 'safe' ones used by all reputable international companies? And then put in a printed package that looks like a USA branded item? (In third world countries, people will see packages in their retail stores of USA and european company branded items offered at low prices. The item looks like the brand name whatever, but does usually indicate that it was made in China. Sometimes you can tell by poor quality printing, spelling, etc. It's fake, made to look like the 'brand name' item.)

Good things can come from Chinese factories. But, there are no controls of what comes into the USA in these sea freight containers (no inspections when they arrive and no customs duty collected by our government of the USA - you are also 'paying' for that!).

The USPS has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with what a company posts on their website....
Whether they have it in stock or not.

(Guess ya gotta blame it on somebody though.)
