One thing that helps is some nice clouds.

I agree with NMGal clouds, not overcast, make a difference.

You might want to try a filter like a ND2.

Down here along the coast, scattered mid to high level clouds seem to be the best for my tastes.

I don't know if they still do, but they used to include pollution levels with NY weather reports. High pollution can make for beautiful skies.

Would you please explain how to use a #2 neutral density filter to predict atmospheric conditions?

i have an app on my phone called Sky Candy that attempts to predict the quality of sunrises and sunsets. I haven't found it to be especially accurate...

Hold it up to the sky, and look through it. If you see a combination of sky and mid-level clouds through it, it'll probably be a good time to shoot sunrise/sunset pictures for the next hour or so.

Volcanic eruptions and west coast wildfires have produced some epic sunsets/sunrises albeit air quality left a lot to be desired...

btw; A volcanic eruption with global repercussions... Mount Tambora on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia (at that time part of the Dutch East Indies) between April 5th and 15th, 1815. This event changed the climate of the entire world! Surreal darkening of the sky changing day into night...

1816, the year without a summer...

Maybe another eruption will be Mother Nature's way to stop global warming. I don't think we can do it on our own.

When the sun rise bug bites
Pack your stuff for am
Set your alarm
Good luck
That’s it for me I might get up several days in a row to get something worth while
I also watch forecasts partly cloudy if not on alarm clock
