I'll preface this by saying that I'm not a pro nor do I aspire to be. My goal is high-quality snapshots that are both technically and compositionally acceptable to me. I don't shoot for money nor do I think I can create a body of work that will get my name mentioned in the same sentence as Ansel Adams. I just want some nice pics for my own entertainment and to share with friends and family. So... if you have higher aspirations, you may just want to ignore my advice and seek it from a pro or very serious amateur.

I've been shooting for a long time and am hung up on Nikon. I've owned a few other brands over the years, but from the release of the D70 (got mine in '05, I think) it's been, Nikon. That was the last new one. I've got a bunch of Nikon One series, point and shoots, crossovers, and DX Mount DSLRs, and lenses. Everything since that D70 has been used or refurb and I have nothing bad to say about any of them except the D80 which bricked after a lot of use and it was time to move along anyway. Even most of my accessories are used, refurbished, or new third party for lenses. I do everything on a low budget and couldn't be happier. I don't print anything, I just put things online or on thumb drives to give away.

I just bought a D7100 for $350 with 20k releases on the shutter. It looks and performs like new. There is a Tamron 16-300 lens that would probably do 95% of what you'd want that I see used online for $300 plus or minus. That would give you a place to start. Bet you get a lot of answers contrary to that, but then you'll have your choice of opinions. Good luck and have fun!

Probably something like a Canon 80D with an 18-135 would be a nice starter camera, and may just be all the camera/lens you need for a long time. A Canon RP or Nikon Z5 would be more "future proof", as current trends are toward mirrorless and FF.

I would like to recommend you stay with Nikon. For your first, used purchase, go big: try to find a nice, used Nikor 24-70, 2.8 lens. That lens is amazing. Then look around for a used Nikon D610. That will give you good glass, and an entry level professional-ish, full frame camera. That should keep you busy for the next few years and your photos will be amazing. You will learn so much! Someone just sold a D610 on this forum recently. Good luck!

Welcome to UHH Frank. I sent you a private message about a nice Nikon camera and lenses that I purchased to upgrade the camera we gave my granddaughter who was her high school yearbook photog a year ago. It's still in my bedroom closet as my wife explained that we could not give one granddaughter a gift with value many times greater than we gave to the other grandchildren. I guess wives are more attuned to those considerations. In any case, look at the PM and let me know what you think. Best, Richard

I am an elderly serious amateur for whom weight and $$$ are big factors. I have a Canon T2i with 18-135mm STM and 50mm Yongnuo lens. The T2i is one of the smaller/lighter DSLRs, and is available pretty cheap used. The lenses provide all the coverage that I want, and image quality is more than good enough. Remember that with DX there is a crop factor, so you lose some wide and gain some tele.

I also use several P&S cameras when I need really small gear. I use a Canon S110 when I want best quality, and a Fuji F500 when I want maximum reach.

Hope that this provides some help.

I have used my Nikon D70S with great results. I have the 18-200 VRII lens so I don't have to be changing lenses. You can find one on eBay for under a hundred dollars but the lens has skyrocketed. I recently bought the Nikon Z-6 with the 24-70 lens that cost about $2,000.00 and found it is too much camera for me. I will be ninety-two in a few days. Nikon no longer does repair, or has parts for the D70S so I bought a back-up in case mine goes out.
