I'm looking to upgrade my older D810 to either the D850 or Z7ii and would like some advice and opinions. I have a Z6, which is a great camera and works well with my lenses and the lens adaptor. The two cameras are pretty comparable, with a few exceptions like number of shots per battery charge and the mirror/mirrorless aspect. I mainly shoot landscape, rivers and people.

Said it before, I'll say it again. You seem to be asking if MPs will make a difference in your landscapes. It is really about how much detail/sharpness do you want. Go here:

You does your research, pays your "penny", makes your choice, and takes your chances. Nobody else can do it for you.

I personally like the dslr cant compose as well on screen (bird photography mostly) use 810 and 200-500 so your decision is based on what you shoot weight is a factor ability to see screen in bright sunlight 850s hard to get right now if you want new dont know about Z would think for your style of photography 810 is good but it is getting old so go handle each one and see how it fits think 850 expeed 5 z expeed 6

I know this is old fashioned, but what is a new camera intended to accomplish? How could you have exhausted the capabilities of a 24MP full-frame mirrorless camera newly released in 2018?

Either would be a great choice for what you shoot. Do you like shooting your Z6 & some of the benefits of the EVF & focusing in low light & thru filters as much or more than a DSLR? If so get the Z camera. I own the D810 & don't think I would upgrade for what you shoot unless I was going to go mirrorless with the S lens for the Z cameras. You could get the Vertical Grip for extra battery life with the Z7 ll. If you think you will upgrade to the S lens line up for the Z system , that is another plus for the Z7 ll with reviews saying the lens are better. ALso 9-10 frames per second on the Z7 ll. To get that with the D850 you need close to another $1k & for what you shoot, you don't need it anyway but it is nice to have if you need or want it. I would like the D850 for the tilt screen( this would be the most reason for me to upgrade as I shoot low a lot), focus peaking & focus stacking along with a little better iso performance & a better focus system for wildlife that I shoot & not have to think about buying lens for the Z system. But that is for me. Good luck with your new Camera what ever you choose. Happy New Year & stay safe.

D810=36 mp. Still more of a reason not to upgrade unless there are features the op needs or wants.

Do you feel that the D810 is not competent enough for the subjects you shoot often?

So right. It seems people are afraid to do their own evaluations/research. There is a need to have a handheld.

I am looking at the same decision. I have primarily shot wildlife, using a D500. Purchased a well-used D810 a while ago to test the FF waters. Love the high resolution, but feel that the D810 is old technology. So, since neither the D850 nor the Z7II will replace the D500, the choice for me to get high resolution in a more up-to-date body is the Z7II, or even a used Z7.

The D810 is no slouch, and any image quality increase will be incremental and maybe not visible for all your expense at upgrading. I usually ask, "How long before the images you get with the new camera, (that you could NOT have gotten with the old camera), pay for the additional expense of the new camera?" The main differences for use may just come down to something like, the D810 has a built-in flash, like the others don't, but the others have an articulating screen, like the D810 does not. I could see how maybe the eye focus of the Z7II would be important for BIF, so that would be great, if you are missing that feature on the D810 to such a degree that it is worth the upgrade, then so be it.

Believe me, I've done the research. There is only so much that comparisons and on line reviews can tell you. I'm curious about actual experience and use. So far the most significant difference I can see is that the Z7ii has built in stabilization.

True, but aren't the opinions of others who may have experience with this equipment part of research? Sometimes other opinions will cause you to consider things you haven't thought of yourself

Having and using a D850, that would be my recommendation.
