Why is it that photographers are obsessed with obtaining so many lenses? I only have 3 lenses that serve me well. I have owned them now for about 8-10 years during which I have bought 4 new bodies. My lenses are the Canon 10-22mm efs, the 24-105mm L EF, and the 100-300mm EF. During the time i have owned these lenses I have owned the Canon XT, the 60d, 70d and now the 90d bodies. But I have never had a desire to buy new lenses. Why would I? My 24-105 is my general purpose lens. I use it for 75% or more of my shots. The 10-22 is for when I have to go wide and the 100-300 is for sports, wildlife and general telephoto needs. I cannot imagine needing anything else other than maybe a 50mm prime with a large aperture. I don’t have a camera bag big enough for anymore lenses.

How many lenses do you own?

Because its a hobby, no rational reason needed other than "I want", unlike a business that generally requires a profit motive to justify the expense.

7,
50mm. 18-140. 18-400. 28-70 2.8. 70-200 2.8. 70-300. And 150-600 g2.
Out of those i use the 28-70, the 150-600 and 70-200 the most. Havent used the 18-240 in a few years, and only used the 18-400 twice (wife uses it daily)

don't need them all. Just wanted them all. And want a couple more, don't know exactly why

I think you are very smart with your lens. But just maybe primes
have some magic in making images. My Sony 55mm zeiss does things my
zooms can't. I own the Sony RX10 III their first Sony bridge camera with a 24mm
to 600mm lens. Great images and great video even 4k. Their is no reason to
want anything more. But......

I own enough lenses - 20 at the moment. But when I was deriving an income from photography I had another 8 or so - but they were dupes of what I already had. There is no worse feeling than arriving at a venue, attaching ta lens to the camera and it not working correctly, and being stuck without a backup. Having only 3 lenses is ok unless your livelihood depends on it.

I have a Canon 5D Mark IV, a 1v-HS and an AE-1. For the 5D I have a 28-135mm which is my hard worker. For wide photos of a lot of people I have a 14mm, a 24mm Tilt Shift for architectural photos, and a 70-300 for outdoor photos of wild life.
I recently bought an AE-1. I have a 50mm and a 28-85mm that it came with. Also, the mount is different from the 5D and the 1v. The 1v was a gift from my wife. I picked up a 50mm lens and 24-135 lens to keep in the bag when I’m out and about.
The 5D and the 1v have compatible mounts so I can use them interchangeably.
You know that different cameras and different lenses do different things. There may be some redundancy but each lens has different configurations of the elements inside. The “sweet spot” inside will vary well as some lenses minimize chromatic aberrations in different degrees. Add to the fact that I rather not keep taking lenses out of the bag. I have a small sling bag which holds one body and four lenses. So I limit myself to a shoulder and back ache. I might have enough lenses now.

Lens choices are personal and what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another. For me, I prefer Prime lenses over Zoom lenses, and I enjoy using manual focus lenses. I do not carry all my lenses with me. I base my lens choices on where I will be and what I am looking to photograph.

For my Leica M10 I have two lenses: Leica Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH and Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2.

For my Nikon Df I have 8 lenses, 6 Primes and 2 Zooms: Nikkor 28mm f2.8 (AIs), Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2 SL II S, Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 (AIs), AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G, Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL II S, AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4 PF ED VR, AF Nikkor 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D, AF Nikkor 70-210mm f/4-5.6D. I also have a 1.4x TC that I use with the 300m if necessary.

As a professional, you understand the need for checking the equipment before a gig. That includes bodies, lenses and flashes. But things happen and the Law of Murphy will always work against you. Being prepared with duplicates and redundant lenses is key to making a livelihood.

I on the other hand am an occasional hobbyist. Since I am not making a living from photographs I believe I have enough lenses.

A point about redundancy. It is a good practice to follow. Since I am also learning to pilot a plane, the engine actually has a lot of redundant features which cuts into your prep time. I would hate to have a part fail and then there is no part to compensate. It generally doesn’t end well.

It seems like a legit topic to me. Why throw out an insult when you can click the unwatch button?

Everything has to earn it's place in the backpack because I hate carrying the weight on a hike. So like you I try for a few quality lenses within my budget. I have a few that don't earn their place. As a canon shooter I trudge around with a 24-105L, a 100-400 with a 1.4 extender, and a 100mm 2.8 macro. If I want wide angle I will stitch together several shots from the 100 macro.
