Ok so there are so many times Im driving down the road and wish I had my camera. I have always heard its not good to leave it in the car due to weather changes and moisture. Does anyone have their camera in their car, and is it ok to do this?

Thanks
Julie

A rule I've always followed - never leave your camera in a place that you wouldn't want to stay in.

I do but I always bring it in with me wherever I go. I don't leave it in the my truck.

I travel always with one of my smaller (12megapixel) cameras - in my shirt pocket.

Well.... I've lived in my car before so that may not be the best answer.

I bring mine with me everywhere. It doesn't LIVE in the car but when I'm working it's there. I started bringing it after missing out on a few opportunities. I have a nice back pack and setup for keeping things dry and happy. I'm not concerned personally.

Julie, 99% of the time I leave the house I have a camera with me. It's rather simple. I don't leave the camera in the car. I take it with me, unless the car is parked within eyesight of my location.

I'm of the same mindset as quixdraw, I don't leave my cameras any place I wouldn't leave myself.

When traveling it is in a camera bag, either in the trunk or the back seat floor.
I never leave it in the car overnight.
It would never live in the car just to have it available. Cars get below freezing in the winter and 140°+ in the summer.

Here on the Florida panhandle I would never leave it in the car during the summer months (pretty much May/June-October). But during NOT-Summer I will leave it in the truck when I'm out and about without any issues. I don't ever go anywhere that I fear my truck getting broken into and the windows are pretty dark, so can't see much inside anyway.

I experience the same thing when driving especially on back roads where there is more wildlife. The concern I have is that unless I have it where I can just reach and grasp it, what I want to shoot will be gone before I can open a bag etc. Additionally, I would be concerned about traffic safety if you stop to take a photo. It is not a problem but something to be aware of should you have some great opportunity and act before thinking.

Not much traffic out here - when I'm alone in the truck the camera is on the passenger seat on an old towel so I can pull off and grab it. Just flipping the towel over is good enough for sun or light dust - also hides what is in it. If my wife is driving, I usually have a camera in my lap. If it is a photo excursion, there may be a hard case and a shoulder bag with a variety of gear. Even for a quick lunch, the camera or camera bag comes along. For short periods, the hard case is well enough insulated to stay in the vehicle.

I do not leave my camera in the car - not only due to weather concerns, but also, because I do not want to leave a couple thousand $ worth of equipment in there, unattended. I still rare that I do not have a camera with me - I simply take it along wherever I go. When I just take the camera (w/out a bag) I attach it to the passenger seat belt with a short strap.

I keep my Lumix in my car all the time, but I keep the car garaged. It's unheated, but attached to the house so it doesn't freeze in winter. I had to keep the camera connected to the cig lighter. The lighter isn't "hot" while the car is parked and "off" and the camera battery ran down when I had it there too long.

I have a Lumix LX 10 that stays in the console of my SUV except when I'm using it. I was more concerned with heat during the film days. It probably helps a little that I always buy white vehicles.

My DSLRs and mirrorless are generally left in the house or insulated garage.

I live on the East Coast and the temperature almost never reaches 100.

Air temp never reaches 100. Stick a meat thermometer in your car when it's outside. Especially if the car windows are not cracked. Solar oven...

arf...

Personally I have forgotten a camera or another in my car... Never had one destroyed by heat of cold, they are under the seat on in the front passenger foot area.

That said, in 1981 I had a RB67 fly from the front seat into the dashboard (breaking hard). Broke the 180mm portrait lens...

Since I never travel with anything unless secured and unable to fly.

I also had my dog fly from the back seat to the front seat when I had a car accident in 1998... Damn dog took it as a game and seemed to want to do it again!!!
