I recently participated in an F-Stoppers experiment comparing images form a D850 and an I-Phone in combination with a Profoto strobe.

Each image was processed then reviewed by a large number of people who were asked to pick the best between them. The I-Phone won 55% to 45%.

I was in the minority but still very impressed.

I can only image where the technology will be in a few years with phones, strobes/flashes and AI processing.

Wish I was 10 years younger.

It would be my guess that this experiment was designed to play to the iPhone strengths and wide angle photography. An incredible achievement anyway. And Apple says the iPhone 12 is a quantum leap over the previous iterations. Were these contest photos done with the iPhone 12 ????

Does anybody know if these smartphones do pixel shifting? That would significantly increase the pixel count from a small sensor, and it seems to me that smartphones could do this quite well.

I just received the IPhone 12Max this week and will say the photos it takes are easily comparable to a dslr. For a pocket camera it does as well if not better than my Olympus T-6 and there’s no processing needed. Here’s a closeup of a small tree rose that I just now shot.

I want a camera like the I-Phone 12, without the phone.

Why?

I'm still using my Galaxy S-III,
primarily as a phone...
Comes in handy for panos though,
and shots when I don't have my regular camera.

I have an iPhone 8+ and it takes good photos.

In good light.

In poor light, my DSLRs do a significantly better job.

Have not tried photos from newer iPhones. Mine is 2 years old.

When I look at recent photos and compare them to photos taken a decade ago (in art galleries, on the internet, in magazines, etc.), I see practically no significant improvements at all. Certainly some aspects of photography have become easier, but photographers as a whole have not really improved their output.

Simply the acquisition mechanism has changed, and more are utilizing a dry darkroom.

What was the medium the comparison photos were presented? I would imagine digital. The iPhone photos may not have looked as good if they had been printed out at 11x14 or 16x20.
