I have vacationed in West Virginia and it is a beautiful state. Why did you eliminate the roof in the last image?

It’s there! The angle is straight on and it only seems the roof is missing. You are seeing the trees behind the mill.

Okay, I see it now but I thought it was done by you in post processing. Looks like the trees are growing out of the building. I've been to Babcock SP and have a picture of that mill also.

Yes, it's an optical illusion. If you look at the second one first, you don't notice anything odd, but if you look at the first one first, with its oblique angle, and then look at the second one, your eye gets fooled into thinking it's the same angle but with the roof missing. Eyes and brains can do strange things! I have about 75 shots of the mill over the past few years. Each one is slightly different. The water flow varies from season to season and allows access to different shooting points during low flow. As you know, it's a very popular place: the other day there were more tripods there than trees!

Fall in the mountains in West Virginia usually is a photographer's paradise. The variety of settings, land features, the rivers, and the colors of the mixed hardwood and conifer forests is hard to beat. Here are a few from several trips there this year. Comments, critiques, and suggestions are welcomed. Enjoy!

All great shots, but your first one of the mill gets my vote for the best. Hard to beat the textures and colours. #2 for me is the waterfall. Excellent work. Please stay well and keep on sharing.

My wife and I were at the mill in early April on our way home from Florida and there wasn’t much that was green. I wish we could have been there when the Red Buds and Dog Wood were in bloom but we were just a little early. We were all alone in this beautiful area and it was truly wonderful. We we also visited the nearby New River Gorge Park and that was also very beautiful. I think it’s best to see the New River Gorge Park early because once the trees leaf out they would block the wonderful view of this beautiful bridge and river. I have
three 8x10s hanging in our entry of this wonderful grist mill.

Absolutely gorgeous!
New England has nothing on West-by-God when it comes to autumn colors!
