Soldier Beetle

This is one of my preserved Soldier Beetles which are often referred to as "Goldenrod Beetles" for they are quite frequently found on them. I staged it for a focus stacking session at 5X magnification. It may look a bit wet due to being preserved in denatured alcohol which is slow to evaporate.

Below is a image of one that I shot during one of my walkabouts in the field.

The adults are also predators, eating caterpillars, eggs, aphids, and other soft-bodied insects. They will alternatively eat nectar and pollen if no insects are around. They do not damage plant foliage. Adults are often found on flowers such as goldenrod, where they lie in wait for prey, feed on pollen and mate. They are a beneficial insect so they should be welcomed visitors in the garden and flower bed.

Thanks for the flattering feedback. I have a natural curiosity and the little voice in my head that always says, "What if.....". I enjoy sharing what I see through the lens as much as I do taking them and the UHH is a wonderful place to do it.
