This is a Box Elder nymph that I found on the vines along our old kennel building this morning as I walked around letting one of the dogs 'do its business'. There were several of them clustered together so I brought some in for a focus stacking session.
Boxelder bugs are "true bugs" (as you can see from it proboscis) and belong to the same family as stink bugs, cicadas and other insects with piercing and sucking mouthparts. They release a bad odor when crushed much like that of a stink bug. They are bright red when they first hatch, they change to red and black as they get larger in their life. They are not considered to be a serious nuisance and they enjoy warm sunny areas...much like me!

Thanks, Tinusbum. I've been noticing that many of our critters here are packing up to be heading to your luxury warmer weather resort down there. Soon all that will be left for me here will be Snow Scorpions.

Thanks, Napabob. Fall is quickly approaching so I have to get them while I can.
