What the heck is this?

I found this on my back door late yesterday afternoon. It wasn't there in the morning. I took the photo at about 1:1 with my macro lens. The thing is about one centimeter in diameter and the hole is about two millimeters in diameter. It was about three feet from the bottom of the door. I've never seen anything like it and would love to know just what type of insect (assuming?) made it and/or is living in it.
I know there are many very knowledgeable Hoggers here and hopefully someone will know what it is.
Thanks in advance.

Would a wasp make one with that small an opening?

Potter Wasp nest, I think. They are apparently nasty stingers. Search and you'll find lots of info.

Follow up: After Googling and watching a couple of videos, I think you nailed it quixdraw. As of a few minutes ago the hole is still open so she probably has not inserted a larva yet, or possible has abandoned the nest. I'm going to watch it a few days and see if it gets closed off.

Jack, three years ago I saw something like that but there was no opening. Out of curiosity I busted it open to see what was inside. I'm posting the images here simply because I believe you are also curious.

Very interesting JRiepe. From what I Googled today, the wasp closes off the opening once she has laid her egg and inserted a paralyzed larva or caterpillar for the baby wasp to feed on. The baby wasp then breaks out of the nest when large enough. Yours looks like baby was getting pretty large. Yikes, good to not be an insect.

Very interesting that this wasp lays only one egg.

Thanks for looking in sippyjug. As of now (Tues AM) the hole is not plugged. Maybe the momma wasp has abandoned the nest?
