I've got mantises too. This one in my back yard, no less. She is 4 1/4" long, and they get bigger. Her wing does that. This is me talking to her: "Whose a good girl? You are! You are!"

That is a great photograph showing the size of the mantis. She is probably getting ready to leap at you to tear your throat out. Oh wait...you are not a caterpillar. Never mind.

Well done,

Dennis

Oh, i would not do that. She always wants to climb, though, and if you wait too long as she walks up your arm then you suddenly have it on your back. Then it gets awkward. :)

Such a priviledge to have a mantis in your hand, nice one handed shot too.

Nice shot. I saw another one yesterday a little different than the ones I saw earlier but didn't feel like running in to get the camera. Chances are I'll see it again.

Mark,
I really appreciate your obvious affinity to the small critters you shoot, and I share your trust of and love for them.

I hatch Chinese mantis often in my garden.
They have a tendency to space themselves out, one per bush. And they are cannibalistic.
If you start early on, when they are nymphs, they become accustomed to being handled.
The big females make great photo subjects. Males are much more prone to fly.

Thank you , everybody.
Update: After many photographs, I let the lady go in a nearby field where I know there are others of her kind. But first she was given a very good feeding.
I'm already going thru withdrawal.
