It appears to be a well discussed problem https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4141354?page=4 with suggestions ranging from OOF area bokeh edges through to light bouncing around in the lens.

If it were my lens the first thing I would do is undertake a test using a similar type/lit background, distance and settings with a 'solid' target subject to absolutely confirm it is only visible in the OOF area.

Apparently, this is the problem. I took about 300 shots in the last 2 days with backgrounds similar to those that caused the streaking but I took the Tiffen UV filter off. No streaking! I will take more in the next few weeks but this seems to have eliminated the problem. Time will tell. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I didnt read the whole thread, I get the same results when I handhold my camera. The more megapixels you have the more you need a tripod. Just pushing the shutter button can cause problems.

I also usually use stabilization built into the lens. I can’t shoot BIF without it. Usually 1/3200 at f7.1 but the image bounces around too much in the viewfinder without the stabilization. I turned it off to see of it had anything to do with the streaks...nope. After shooting several hundred more without the UV filter, the problem seems to be gone.

Yup! Subjects sharp, background blurred, with "streaks". Not disturbing imo. Some sort of Bokeh?

600 more shots, no streaks. Looks like the UV filter was it.

The photos you have shown last have the bokeh you desire. They were taken with an f-stop at 1.4, 2.0, 2.8, nothing more. Your photos are at f/8, f/5.6, f/7.1, etc. You will never get a creamy bokeh at those apertures. Additionally, a very long lens "flattens" your photo accentuating the affect. I would bet the 2 last examples were taken with a lens less than 100mm. Finally, at the distance you were shooting , even with a high shutter speed, will exaggerate any movement. The "streaks" you see are from light bouncing off the grasses and their movement. They are acceptable photographs, but without the bokeh you are after. If your lens allows, stop down to 2.8, put your ISO in it's natural setting - probably 100 or 200, and I think you'll get what you are after.

I saw the reply regarding the UV filter. I have seen that happen as well, but that will not give you the bokeh you are after.

I don’t think you read the whole post. I was trying to eliminate the streaks. They are not what I desired and draw the eye away from my focus. I understand how to create bokeh and usually shoot with the widest fstop available. I would refer you to some of my other posts and pictures. You might check out the one on using a long lens to shoot macro.

I did read your entire post. I'm reacting to the statement you made... "Here is the kind of background I would rather have." Those photos had a nice creamy, out of focus, bokeh. I assumed that'as what you were looking for. I would love to look at some of your posts and pictures, but haven't got that far in this forum. Perhaps you can direct me. I also went to the web page suggested in your bio... but it has been taken down.

Yeah, my website is not used. I really only use the ftp site portion of the site. My photo partner and I share files that way. We were in a South Texas photo contest that runs every other year and is mainly wildlife in 2019 and came in 5th place. The top 5 places have a write up in the book that is published for each contest. You might check out the information and pictures at www.wildlifeinfocus.org. We are preparing for the next contest which starts in January 2021 and runs until 15 June. Last contest we shot over 18,000 pics. Lots of editing. 47 categories, max 3 shots per category.

I’m going out in the boonies at the lease tomorrow morning with no internet, spotty phone service. I’m going to shoot with no filter and try to duplicate the conditions where I got the streaking. If it disappears...problem solved. Back Monday. I’ll let you know what happens. Thanks for all your suggestions and comments.

I've had strange artifacts show up in images with a Tiffen polarizing filter. I didn't have streaks, it was something else. But I asked an instructor at a class I was taking and he suggested I invest in a better filter.

That filter has been with me since I used to use it on my Mamiya RB67 120mm film camera, 20+ years ago. No problems then. I have found that several filters used for film have had different, unexpected results when used on digital. I should have checked before I used it instead of just assuming. I guess I’m lucky that the streaking was not too bad just irritating when I couldn’t pin down the cause.
