Just wondering what most UHH's are using for external hard drives and sizes? Any specific sizes and brands you prefer? Reasons to stay away from others? How often do you replace yours for prevention of failure? I save Raw and finished jpg's mainly but am moving up to a D600 anticipating data storage. All photo's altered go through cs6, nik, Lightroom, Dxo as necessary. Currently I have 40/50 k of images but my current drives are getting long in the tooth. I would not discard my old drives but will keep them for backup copy redundancy.

You can get a T-bite at Sam's right now for like $100 bucks give or take a couple dollars. I can let you know exact amount tomorrow since I'm probably going down and buying another lol...I need one for backup and one to work on. My laptop is almost too full lol....I don't recommend doing backup on your laptop, it fills up quickly with RAW files. I believe Walmart had them for roughly the same price too. Good luck.

I will try SAMs tomorrow. Thanks for the tip. My only problem, notice how when you go into SAMs it always costs $100 more than what you went in for! Kinda like Walmart, Target, and camera shops!!!

There are a few ideas to back your photos
I've been using DVDs which are ok, but you are best to use an external hard drive
I have two WD 1.5 tb HDs USB attached to MacBook pro one photos and videos and the other for other stuff.
Also two portable WD HDs one for videos and the other for photos these are plugged into a media player which is attached to the TV
You see plenty of backup, good insurance. Hope this helps and never under estimate the importance of backup. Regards

Just another thought.......wondering if anyone is using USB memory sticks for photo storage. I think you can get them up to 32 Gig now.
Any thoughts on this?

I have small external drives for convenience, but I like using large external drives, too. 1TB should be the smallest you get.

I like Western Digital, and their Black drives are their best, so they cost a bit more. You don't want to shop for the absolute cheapest hard drive you can get. Only two things matter in a hard drive: capacity and quality. Price is irrelevant. Decide on the brand and model and then look for a good price.

I got a dock like the one below, so I can use internal drives for backup. They're often less expensive than externals because they don't need a case, etc.

The only drive I ever had fail was a WD 2TB external that fell onto the floor while it was running. What a shame!

I jumped in early on and bought a DROBO. It is like a RAID, but the company (Data Robotics) says it's proprietary. I have stored over 24,000 photos on mine in the past 5 years and it isn't even half full. Mine holds 4 SATA drives, but they have larger ones. Maximum storage on mine is 16TB. Nice thing about it being proprietary is that they have a support staff that is always available, although you'll rarely need them.

I've had a 1TB Buffalo drive (comprised of 4 250mb drives) for going on 7 years. Power Supply failed, had repaired but then also bought a Syslogic system: 2 - 3TB drives; one primary storage, the other backup. Now I use the Buffalio as my primary storage for all documentation and as the backup storage. I use the Syslogic as the primatry storage for all images.

Hitachi 4TB drives are my current favorite, followed by all other large things Hitachi. These drives are formerly IBM, but the division was sold to Hitachi. Very dependable. Western Digital makes less dependable, and beneath that, the once mighty Seagate, which has, unfortunately, poor standards of manufacture, and zero product testing before the things get shoved out the door. On a lark, I bought three Seagates at a seemingly cheap sale price once. All three were DOA, and they had to be returned.

I prefer the Thermaltake ESATA boxes with fans for my drives. Keeping drives COOL is a good thing. The bad thing about Thermaltake is, apparently, their motherboards are made of compressed bread crumbs. They just die after a year or so. An expensive habit, but ESATA speed is the semi distant cousin to Thunderbolt, and faster than most other protocols.

Unless you can find a way to burn at NO MORE THAN 4x speed, where 1x is by far the best, CD's and DVDs will fail quickly and the various computer associations do NOT recommend these for serious backup.

M-Disk is another story, and for DVD level storage, IS recommended. Just remember, in all things pit based, SLOW burning is ALWAYS preferred. Pit DEPTH is everything. I have 25 year old CD's still readable due to 1) high quality disc, and 2) 1x burning. M-Disk, well made, will last about 1,000 years.

Blu-Ray has a better, more archival chemistry than everything else burnable save M-Disk, where "etched in stone" is the literal truth. Blu-Ray offers decent size, about 25GB, of storage.

Thanks Jerry, this is definitely what I was looking for! I like the hot swap and storage solutions on this cabinet. I also have the individual WD drives some smaller due to their age some are small. I was looking for something like this to spread the info around multiple points and update to newer drives for protection. Great choice and mine is now officially ordered with some drives to boot.
