Very true but $$$ šŸ˜³ for lenses that only fit one system.

ā€œHogster Wisdomā€ often revolves around the ā€œnew improvedā€ lens lines for Canon and Nikon and how users of the new lens mounts will want to migrate to the new improved lenses.

That ā€œwisdomā€ ignores an obvious group of buyers. Buying a Z6 can be no different than buying a D750 would be for a D700 owner. Itā€™s a plain and simple upgrade of the camera body that supports your existing lenses.

I have already done that. My Sonys support my existing Canon EF and Nikon F-mount lenses. The Canon lenses remain fully operational but the Nikon lenses suffer some loss of conveniences. Buying a Z6 would restore most, sometimes all, of that lost convenience.

Restoring convenience to my numerous Nikon lenses is plenty of justification for an $1825 camera body ... perhaps a bit less justified if I had only one or two lenses to ā€œrestoreā€.

Why a Z6 rather than a Nikon SLR for convenient use of my F-mount flock ? I already own those SLRs with their feeble manual focus mode, inaccurate AF, and ridiculous attempt at live view.

So I plan to migrate my lenses from D750 and D610 to the Z6. Whatever the new Z-mount lenses offer is absolutely none of my business. I am simply upgrading the support for my existing Nikon lenses ... same as my Sonys already upgraded the support for my existing Canon lenses (vs use on Canon SLRs).

Totally understood.... Iā€™m in the same boat. Iā€™d rather get a good mirror less that ensures I use my collection of excellent Nikon glass. Iā€™ve no desire or need to buy more glass.

This is a naive question but would my Nikon glass easily work ( and well) on a non Nikon mirrorless camera ?

Basically looking for quicker shutter speed (more than the DSLRs I own) and faster AF

What do you mean by ā€œquickerā€ shutter speed?

Ok The AF is the source of much debate on the Z-line. Performance is a combination of lens and cam body do you have to consider that.

Sony has been kicking butt with mirrorless auto focus. Nikon waited too long to enter the mirrorless market so they are having to catch up. But they are closing the gap quickly!

If you are interested in birds and wildlife spend some time at www.backcountrygallery.com. Steve Perry is a true professional and uses a lot of Nikon gear. He has made videos about the capability of the Nikon mirrorless offerings with regard to wildlife photography. The videos are on his site and are free.

I have a lot of Nikon gear, so am pretty deeply "invested" in that brand. None of the three bodies I have (D5/850/500) are mirrorless and I have been thinking about adding a mirrorless body to the arsenal to get faster shutter speed and AF esp for BIF and wildlife action as well as for better video capabilities. I have heard a lot about the wonders of Sony and other mirrorless bodies and lenses - however, going outside the Nikon range would mean interoperability problems. What would you wise people advise?
a) stick with Nikon?
b) if yes, which one?
c) if not, what would you recommend and how would compatibility / interoperability be solved?
d) should I just shut up and stick with DSLR's ?!!

Absolutely, you will like the mirrorless! I have them all and the Z5 is on order. I would suggest starting with the Z5 when you can get one. I personally like the Z6ā€¦Z7 and the Z50. Be sure to get a FTZ adaptor.

On what parameter(s) does your current kit fail to meet your client's expectations?
That alone likely drives a commercial shooters capital expenditures...

I've had to pretty much close my studio owing to covid19 since I truly care about the health and safety of my loyal client base... I shoot Nikon primary D3x and D810 and imagery produced by my kit still greatly exceeds client expectations... In the studio the D3x is vastly superior to the D810 while for sport (I have league soccer clients) the D810 truly shines...

That said, I've noticed hobbyist on UHH are constantly posting upgrade queries looking for validation from other hobbyist... must be nice to be independently wealthy i.e. one's kit isn't a commercial tool but rather a luxury toy by which one attempts to establish their persona with their peers... like having a sport car that is never raced but looks nice in the country club parking lot... oh well enjoy your next upgrade and I hope it brings you the validation you seek RahulKhosla... btw anyone who can afford excursions to Switzerland from India obviously isn't having issues feeding their children... all the best on your epic journey RahulKhosla

Food for thought: Photographic excellence is not a consumer commodity...

The first next-step for all photographers contemplating a move to mirrorless is to sell all their DX / EF-S equipment. If they've already made this action, the next next-step is to sell all their DSLR-style lenses where there is already a superior Z / RF / E-mount lens. The final-step is to sell-off all the DSLR bodies. Don't let a mirror stop you from being the photographer you could become.

The AF performance of the Z6 and Z7 can't match the AF performance of the D5, D500, and D850. I have a D500 and rented the Z6 for two weeks. I did side by side shooting with both every day. The Z6 would often hunt to achieve focus in even slightly dim light. I activated the low-light focusing feature but that didn't help. The D500 would achieve focus on the same subject immediately. The D500 is superior for continuous tracking also. I'm waiting until Nikon's second or third generation Z series come out to look again.

All of these cameras have a fastest shutter speed of 1/8000 second. You wouldn't gain anything there.

With the D850 and D500 you really don't need anything else. It's just gas. We all get it.

Nothing really wrong there ... but youā€™re really being too limited in outlook with your constant drumming about the lenses. For all of us who are verrrrry happy with our lenses there is tremendous benefit in a compatible live view body. Adios SLRs. No regrets.

Just stepping up to improved AF and MF accuracy, silent shutter, total image preview (etc etc) is the attraction for plenty of users. New lenses as well ? Not an attraction, even a deterrent if they were mandatory like back when the SRT and CFD mounts died.

IOW if the Z and R series never happened, we would be quite fed up with our SLRs but have NO complaints about our lenses. Natcherly, we seek to replace ONLY the component that troubles us.

Relief from such troubles is now here and relief is welcome. Further miracles were not prayed for, and do not concern those of us very happy to just have relief.

Z and R kits with SLR lenses are not half a loaf. They are a whole pizza ! You seem to insist we all need two pizzas, with the works, plus salad, lest we starve and waste away.

We imagine improving our photography, but we cling to our old DSLRs and especially our old lenses.

Cling to old lenses ? Some may do so but plenty of old lenses remain in use cuz we IGNORE them. We just use them without further thought cuz they always do their job and donā€™t interfere with our work.

The difference is that camera bodies are operational while lenses tend to be mostly passive. If we are looking for operational improvements itā€™s generally gonna be a new body.

Most people only dream of success, the successful few wake up and buy a mirrorless camera along with the superior lenses.
