I coon hunted years ago.
In fall the deep woods is full of a variety of them. Always web in your face, at least till a couple hard frosts. Some of them spin a small pad of white silk and sit in the middle.
They look like a bird turd with the liquid being the silk.
Night is when they are active. And numerous. Wolf spiders, too.

Nice shots of this interesting little spider. As is often the case, your post sent me off to learn more and I found that these do not have venom, are good at keeping mosquitoes down and set up their webs at night between trees/shrubs in 'open corridors' where insects fly.
