Proof that it can be done. I left the DSLR at home because of the room it took up in the luggage. Most of the time we were packed up going somewhere on a long trip, so the small compact camera worked well.

Our typical trip was 3 weeks. Alaska, St Johns Newfoundland, Key West FL and Cabo when the wife came along. Typically 8 people on 5 bikes. Places too numerous to count with 2 or 3 or more friends. A couple Iron Butt rides- 1000 in 24 and 1500 in 25. All 50 states (rented one HI) and all th Canadian provinces. I have ice on my drive otherwise I’d hav had the hog out already.

It is actually the fact that a Harley fires on an open valve. I understand most won't understand but that is what makes their trademark sound also. I've won a lot of money in bars over that bet. Makes a great sound but creates a lot of vibration.

Single crank pin. You would have taken my money on the open valve.

No extra stuff was the key. We typically did 2 days camping and 1 in a motel. Depended on weather of course. Packing up a tent in rain just isn’t worth it. Now always motels.

I read about a guy, several years ago, who set out on a minimalist ride from the West Coast to the Atlantic. He left with what he was wearing and took a toothbrush. He’d go for several days until he couldn’t stand himself, then he’d stop in a town pick up some clothes at a second hand store or Salvation Army, get a motel room and clean up, then go several more days and repeat. I don’t think I’d do it quite that way, but I’m sure it made for an interesting ride. I always wondered if he had some raingear.

I've carried cameras in my Tour Pack many times with no problems. Wrap them carefully in foam or underwear and you should be fine. But you sure won`t have easy, quick access. You might think about using a messenger bag (available from Amazon at a wide range of sizes and prices) that you carry over your shoulder. That way it's always with you when you want it, and you don't leave it unattended on your scoot.

I agree with others, a smaller super-zoom bridge camera is my choice. I prefer to leave the DSLRs and lenses at home and travel lighter. Enjoy the ride.

The road is calling and I must go.

If he didn’t he could extend the time between clothing changes after rain. You can go San Diego to Jacksonville in under 48 hours total time. You have to sleep fast in Texas at the halfway point. One of my partners on the 1500 in 24 did Seattle to NYC in under 50. Iron Butt assn calls it a 50cc.

Once or twice a year, I take a week or so motorcycle trip with a group of friends. I ride a Harley Road King which creates a considerable amount of vibration. I'm sure it would shake my camera apart if I were to pack it in a saddle bag -- although I've never tested the theory :). I've thought about strapping a hard protective case to the luggage rack or back seat. I'm wondering if anyone has done this or something similar and might have a suggestion as to what might work or worked for them?

We ride to some beautiful spots. Last year I found myself in Terlingua, TX at Big Bend National Park looking up at the Milky Way with nothing but an iPhone 6S+. The only time I take a camera with me on the bike is if I pack it in my Lowepro backpack and wear it to wherever I'm going. Not so bad for short trips but not really practical for longer trips. Anyway, thanks for any suggestions.

That’s not fun riding, though. That’s for the bragging rights!!

Anything on 2 wheels is fun. It’s defiantly a subject of conversation, and for sure bragging rights. I’d love to do the 11,000 mi in 11 days, but it’s out of the question for me now Wikipedia has an article: Iron Butt Association.

When we were living in Idaho, a restaurant in the small community of Horseshoe Bend threw an annual chiliburger feed for motorcyclists. The chile burgers were good, and people rode in from all around and far away. We talked to one guy from Florida who attended. We wondered if he happened to be in the area on a tour on his BMW, and he said, no, he told his wife he was going to go out for a chile burger. She said, “See ya when you get back.” So he jumped on his Beemer and rode to Idaho. Any excuse to go for a ride.

Gotta ask, is there any lens with enough VR to shoot from a running Harley??

I’m sure H-D will say there probably is, but we know otherwise. LOL!

They really only vibrate in a small part of the power band. Ride one, you’ll understand. 😎. On the other hand how could photograph and ride a bike?

I’ve been to Horseshoe Bend. Never for a chili burger though.

It ain’t easy. I’ve tried it with a simple P&S Nikon I had, and I don’t recommend trying it. The pics just didn’t turn out very good.
