Forget it! $200 will not buy you anything you'd be happy with, especially if you're used to using a Nikon (I'm assuming you refer to a big DSLR, or equivalent). Try an Olympus Pen series or OM-D-EM10 III, all of which are compact, have a damned good "auto" mode, allowing you to P & S to your heart's content. The bonus is they have enough adjustments/settings to let you stretch out if you so desire.., plus the image quality is excellent.., aaannnnddd.., it will fit in your pocket with the 14 - 42mm EZ pancake Kit lens mounted. I'm just sayin'.

I keep a point and shoot to use when I can’t or don’t want to carry a “big” camera. Currently I have two. A Canon Sureshot G-11, and a Fujifilm Finepix xp140. I really like the Canon for the fully articulated screen. The Fujifilm is water proof to 80 feet and ruggedized.

I’d recommend looking for a camera with these features...
* Articulated LCD screen - the articulated screen on my Canon let me get a really good shot of a Taylor Momsen at a Pretty Reckless concert.
* Weather Resistance
* A look-in view finder - in the bright sun, it can be very hard to see an LCD screen.
* Optical Zoom - a digital zoom is okay as an additional feature, but an optical zoom should be the primary zoom.
* Shirt pocket size - I go to Austin TX frequently to view concerts. The venues there have a rule: you can bring a camera in, but it must fit in your pocket and may NOT have interchangeable lenses.

Good luck with finding one for less than $200.

After I responded to your question I took a trip down memory lane. Here are a few pics taken with the Nikon A900. I bought the Sony RX10 MKIV recently and was prepared to complement that with the RX100 MKVII (which I know is the cream of the crop), but I 'm so pleased with this Nikon I just can't pull the trigger for the RX100. The Nikon has 20 megapixels, 5 axis vibration reduction, 4k ultra HD video, tilt screen, built in Wi-Fi & bluetooth and a 35X super zoom!! That's 24-840mm.!! Pretty impressive in my book. It also has a great little macro mode. I've seen them going for in the $200 range. Good luck in your quest. I just saw a refurb. on ebay for $175.

good morning all, I am going to Northern California and will not be able to lug my Nikon and gear with me this trip. Its been a decade or so since last purchase so don't know what bells and whistles are out there and would like to know before I step into a camera shop. So what do you all carry? Would like to stay around the $200 price range.

Search for a used Nikon Coolpix P7800. Nice little rig with lots of features. The

I bought a used Panasonic FZ-1000 Gen1 for $380.
I use it for when I travel or can't bring my kit into a venue.
Some samples

For your budget look at KEH's offerings with an EX+ rating. I bought a nice little point and shoot Nikon S7100 for under $35 including shipping! My budget was obviously quite a bit less than yours but it does the job I wanted it for (to record my work on aircraft and machine shop).
Good luck on your shopping and your trip.

Rick

I had an S8200 and loved it. After it was stolen I replaced it with an S9600. Great little P&S cameras. Very reasonable on the used market.

just upgraded my phone to an iphone 11. amazing camera(s), and the lightroom ish editing built into the photo app is pretty good. won't replace the FF Nikon and good glass, but it's almost always with me and ready to shoot quickly

I use a Canon Powershot HS-50SX. Great range, relatively small and light. Excellent IQ. I think you can find a used one right around $200. I paid $219 for mine some time ago.

Let me second this suggestion. I love my SX-50. I could wish for a larger sensor with a greater pixel density, but I've taken pictures that others w/a full DLSR could not.

Take your Nikon with a 50mm f1.8 prime lens mounted.

Panasonic FZ1000 can shoot raw and has a 1" sensor, 25-400mm f/2.8 - f/4 eq lens.
