OP asked for recommendations at 11:39 and was off to the camera store at 12:07.

Congrats to those of you who responded so quickly with obviously good information.

I picked up one at the camera store today, like I needed an excuse to readjust my wish list huh. We took some in store photos and did look pretty good. I use a D300 Nikon which I admit is elderly and its comparable in looking at the results. thanks for your input.

$200 is pretty low for a good one. Those are the ones that have all but disappeared because smartphones work so much better. The biggest advantage to small "point and shoots" will be better lenses than can be squeezed into a phone. For the better glass, you may need to raise the budget!

Speaking the truth, here.

Save the money and use your cell phone.

Any dedicated camera, even an inexpensive pocket P&S, will be better than a cell phone camera. Particularly when it comes to optics.

Still haven’t decided yet. I meant to mean I picked one to test shoot, lol.

Same situation for me. Finally bought a Canon SX70. Shoots in raw. About $500.

I agree with retap. The Panasonic ZS70 with it's Leica Lens (24-720 MM), is a fantastic camera
and it's well within your price range Direct from Panasonic or KEH.

bsprague suggested the Olympus TG-6 which will be a bit more then what you wanted to spend, but also a great choice.

Go to a really good camera store (not best buy or Costco) and you can find a good camera for $200 that will do the trick. Or go ahead and get that good Iphone now. You are going to upgrade someday so it might as well be now.

The technology in those pocket cameras these days is superb.
They take great photos and give a lot of options.

good morning all, I am going to Northern California and will not be able to lug my Nikon and gear with me this trip. Its been a decade or so since last purchase so don't know what bells and whistles are out there and would like to know before I step into a camera shop. So what do you all carry? Would like to stay around the $200 price range.

I love my Sony HX99. About twice your budget, but you get what you pay for. A 24-750 mm Zeiss lens, a pop up viewfinder, and this camera delivers. I put mine in a belt pouch for hands free good times.

Dating back to the first time I heard the word Sony, I have never been disappointed in anything Sony that
I ever bought.
A few days ago when going through a file draw I came across the first digital camera I ever bought. A Sony for $2,100. At the time, I remember comparing it to going from flying a Cessna 150 to a rocket ship.
If this is a pretty weekend, I may get it out and have some fun.

I have a Canon sx530hs, a Panasonic Lumix fz70, and an fz80. The canon is the smallest. A 50x zoom that has 4x that digital capability. You can find any of these three on Ebay for 200 or less. You likely won't be disappointed at all.

When travelling I always take my Sony RX100Mk2 as well as my D850. My wife is quite happy to carry and use the Sony and has taken some excellent photographs with it. I would think that a second hand Sony RX100Mk2 would come within your budget. I've attached a photograph taken with the Sony when we visited St. Lucia.
