Buying a new laptop.
whenever i need a new laptop for photo processing (I'm on my second), I go to my local computer store (not a big box store). I tell the sales people what I'm looking for; they ask a few questions and then give me a number of suggestions that all fall within my price range. The sales people are all knowledgeable and patient. They work on straight salary so they will not try to up-sell me for a bigger commission.
I, too, have been impressed with the sincerity, enthusiasm, knowledge, and fairness that the various computer sales people have shown. Professionals with incredible amounts of knowledge and PATIENCE with dummies like me.

Couldn't agree more. Check to see what "the big boys" are using. Almost 100% Apple!
Thank you for all the valuable info . Now I will need to process all of this .....and make a decision!

How about good luck with that. Any PC/Mac laptop that you buy will run nearly any photo editing program. The question is "how well?" There are some possibilities out there that fit your budget, but I would not be happy with any of them.
I have been a Mac user since 1985, but can no longer recommend a Mac. Macs used to have lots of ports for connectivity and used to have an optical drive. So the new Mac laptops do not have a versatility and seem to be dumbed down. I have not researched their table top models, however. So look carefully at what ports are available - can you import images, video, audio, software with ease. How many external devices will you need to get.
Dell XPS 13. Best computer I have ever owned. Screen resolution is awesome. While I do many Elements projects on my Desktop computer, I also do a lot of Elements Projects on my XPS. If you need to do screen shots of anything, XPS Touchscreen resolution is 230 ppi vs. Desktop resolution of 76.

...The key to this entire post is that he's using Photoshop, and if that's a subscription service and he doesn't own the actual software, you have to go with the Mac.
Yes, I work both sides of the aisle.
And why do you think that subscribing to PS requires that he go with a Mac?
I was worried about the lack of a SD card port on the Lenovo Legion y545 that some of you guys told me about. Yes, they can use the card reader as some of you wisely suggested. Interestingly, with newer cameras like my D850s I can go straight from camera with cord to a USB port. This should solve my worries. While there, I got an extra 10% off plus $358. and change. I learned a lot listening to you guys. BTW, I also have heard nothing but great things, re: the Dell XPS, both 13” and 15”.
ALSO, I am still going to get card reader for a bunch of my older stuff.

As these posts indicate, your first decision will be Mac vs. PC. There's no middle ground, and whatever software you choose will be dedicated.. Most serious photo pros seem to have gone.
Just to clarify, a LR/PS subscription allows installation on 2 platforms, and one can be a PC and the other a Mac - you just have to download and install the correct version, so it doesn't matter which platform the OP is currently using - he can switch without penalty. I use PS and LR (one subscription) on both a Win 10 PC and an IPad running IOS.

I bought an HP. (HP 15-272wm) paid about $375 for the laptop, then installed 8 gigs of memory and a solid state 1 tb hard drive and got 2 2 tb external hard drives. Total cost was under $750.00
Even if you had to pay someone to do the actual work to it would be under your price point.
Thats an easy way to get a better machine for the money. And most brands can be upgraded in this manor.
Happy shoping.

Check out the lenova Yoga.
I just purchased Lenovo from Amazon for under $300. In stalled Adobe CC, Nik and Lumina. So far so good. Plan on using if for photo viewing while on the road. Also I installed Faststone
