Make sure you try both the Guinness and the Smithwicks. This might also help with the driving.

Thank you for all the responses about Ireland. Great suggestions.

I will be attending a photo workshop with Exploring the Light in Connemara area and then heading north after the workshop.

There are photo opportunities everywhere and with a rental car you can stop where ever and take advantage of it. My only advice is to make sure you get the GPS for the car (probably an extra charge). For all the things the Irish are good at, road signage is not one. Also, directions are freely given but tend to be along the lines of "take a left at the church, count seven mailboxes and turn right". Have a wonderful time.

From Northern Ireland originally. While at the Giant’s Causway, take in Whitepark Bay, and the very scenic coastal areas all along the County Antrim Coast. If you have time, the Mourne mountains in County Down. I usually stay near the little village of Strangford, County Down each year. Lots of scenery around there.

I’ve been to Ireland several times. We use IrelandWalkHikeBike as our guide service. They have itineraries and can set up B and Bs along the way for you.

I will be in Ireland in May for a couple of weeks. Mostly likely more time along the west coast and then north to see the Giant Causeway. I will have a rental car...hope to adjust quickly to left side of road driving.

I would appreciate suggestions on areas I should consider for landscape/scenic photography along with a few castles, etc. I have been looking at internet information and am starting to look at a few travel books. Almost too much information, so your personal experiences could be very helpful.

Thanks,

Slieve League Cliffs in Donegal, Connemara area, Galway....and remember go to the left in the rotaries, they are all over the place as are castles and ruins. Lots of pics here in my Ireland album if you are interested https://flic.kr/s/aHsjuPPwCC

Access to the Giant's Causeway is legally free. Do not enter via the visitor centre, they will charge you. Look for the path to the left of the centre.

The west coast will give great opportunities almost every where. But in addition to all the sites everyone else listed, try Garnish Island, Blarney castle grounds, ancient beehive homes.

May can be a little bit early for many of the gardens. It can also be wet so pack accordingly.

Try researching “The Wild Atlantic Way” it’s the route most people follow for photography.
Just pop it into a search engine and you will get lots of information.
Excellent time to visit as flowers will be coming into bloom
Have a fabulous trip.
Hope this helps.

Try to get to the Giants Causway as early as possible to beat the tour buses. The Cliffs of Mohrer are a huge tourist place. A local (All of whom were very friendly and provided good suggestions on everything from restaurants to sights) suggested we see the cliffs of Slieve which are taller and more rugged than Mohrer but less tour bus friendly. If you like salmon- it's inexpensive and very fresh. Most Irish beers are low alcohol. Have a great trip.

Tiny Kilkenny city where I live was the capital of Ireland in the period called "The Confederation of Kilkenny" when the Irish rebelled against the British and set up their own parliament here in Kilkenny in 1642-1649.

Today, outside of Dublin, Kilkenny has the biggest tourist footprint in the whole of ireland with hundreds of thousands of visitors to Kilkenny castle in the middle of town, and to the old 13th century cathedral with round tower, there's a church there since the 9th century up on a mound where the Druids once held sway, - that you can ascend to the top, bring a good telephoto lens for that! Grace's castle holds the courthouse today, there's the 16th Tudor century mansion, Rothe House in Parliament Street where the old rebel parliament used to be.

But wherever you go, bring water resistant equipment if you can because it's always raining or at least misty in Ireland, though it should be fine here in the month of May.

There are many old churches to visit , such as the 13th century Black Abbey. Thus Kilkenny is today called The Medieval Capital of Ireland.

Good hotels and restaurants dotted throughout as well. Great Irish pubs but modern supermarkets for all you want as well. Kilkenny is recognised as a centre of art and culture, you can visit Kilkenny Design Workshops that's situated in the castle courtyard and buy fabulously designed stuff to your wallet's content.

In May 2018 my wife and I spent 3 weeks in Ireland and Scotland, driving in the countryside but not in Dublin or Edinburgh. I’ve seen the recommendations for viewing the Dingle Peninsula which we thought was nice, but I’d go to the Bears Peninsula first if were to take another trip to that side of Ireland. I’m sure you will enjoy any part of Ireland. Have a great trip and of course we expect to see your prize images posted here.
