I second the recommendation on getting the car insurance. Only place in Europe where I ever got it, and as the other poster hinted, I needed it.

Cliffs of Moher are an obvious early stop if you're heading north from Shannon to Galway.

Know that if you try to get an early start in the morning that you will likely get stuck behind a shepherd and his flock. Ireland is magnificent. The weather is unpredictable. When we were there we got rain and sunshine off and on throughout most days.

Have been to Ireland several times. absolutely great photo ops even where you go.. are you flying into Dublin or Shannon..that info would help with suggestions about castles etc. sounds like your on your own so options abound.also have suggestions for accommodations but il assume already booked by this time..the food in Ireland has come a long way.pub food is more comfort food than greasy bar food found in the states..upscale dining is some of the best I've experienced..seafood was probably caught that morning on both coasts. pm me if you interested in more detail..ireland never gets boring. get an automatic car..as gene stated. small is good. big is such a hassle especially parking..dont take the upgrade at the rental counter..enjoy,jim

I will be in Ireland in May for a couple of weeks. Mostly likely more time along the west coast and then north to see the Giant Causeway. I will have a rental car...hope to adjust quickly to left side of road driving.

I would appreciate suggestions on areas I should consider for landscape/scenic photography along with a few castles, etc. I have been looking at internet information and am starting to look at a few travel books. Almost too much information, so your personal experiences could be very helpful.

Thanks,

Great photo ops abound everywhere. If you're not used to driving on the left side of the road, rent an automatic. Cheers!

Castles and villages, please.

If you try to photograph every castle in Ireland, you will run out of SD cards! Ireland is the home of saints and scholars. And yes, there really are 40 shades of green. It's one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited, and best of all, they love Yanks! I hope to make it back at least once more before I die. Enjoy the ride!

Be most careful when crossing the street!! We are used to looking to the left before crossing, cars will be coming at you from the right!!!

Excellent point. And it also applies when pulling out of a parking lot or driveway. Our hostess at a B&B told us that many accidents happen early in the morning when guests were leaving for the day. We...Americans...are accustomed to looking “left, right, left” when entering traffic. In Ireland it’s “right, left, right” and repeat just to make sure.

Driving in Ireland is challenging. Side mirrors take a beating. Bus drivers in Dublin are not shy about using their horns. Admittedly, I deserved it. But we returned the rental without noticeable damage. All that have been mentioned. Bunratty Castle has an interesting historical village, with buildings from different time periods.

Eastern Ireland: Trim and Newgrange. Went in September of 2018. If I had stopped for every shot I saw I would still be there and would not have traveled very far. People are wonderful. Friendly, helpful... planning another trip in May also.

Before you rent a car make sure they have an automatic transmission and check on the insurance coverage usually provided by the credit card company. Two of mine specifically excluded Ireland and Italy.

The Giants Causeway coast from Portstewart to Belfast has lots of picturesque scenery, you should check with Northern Ireland Tourist Board for a detailed description or Game of Thrones set location map.
Dark Hedges is a street lined with beech trees which is near Giants Causeway go really early to avoid tourists.
Enjoy
Hugh

I would suggest you check out a photo tour with Ron Rosenstock. https://www.ronrosenstock/photo tour
I am an experienced photographer & did this tour with Ron a couple of years ago. The whole thing was superb. The tour operates out of his home there and private accommodations & great meals are provided there on the west coast of Ireland. Daily excursions are the order of the day & he will get you to the best places you can imagine...the right place at the right time. You won't be sorry!
