I had posted this question six years ago. I thought it would be fun to ask it again. I consider my photography as a journey. Why do you shoot and where do you want to go with it?

An artistic eye, and an itch to preserve both the compositions I encounter, and the historical significance of my life's journey. Some tell me my work is worth $, but that is not my motivation; my income has always come by other means, the art of my work has so far been enough to satisfy.

I like devices and technology. Basically, I like "stuff." I bought my first camera when I was about 8 years old, and I've been using them ever since, continually finding a "better" model that is more technological and more fun to use. I hope I can resist buying the D780 to replace my D750.

I think I am a creative person who likes art, yet put a drawing pencil or paintbrush in my hand and I'm a disaster. Photography let's me create images without having to rely on pencil or brush. It's still an art, still visualizing and still creating. Photography works your mind, visualizing and setting up the scene before you push that button. PP is another way to be creative. You can take that photo and make it any way you want. For me, it's all a creative process. As much as I'd like to be able to draw or paint, Photography is what keeps my creativity going.

Wow...at 8.
When I was 8 I (we) were looking for bottles to turn in for the, what two or three cents on the return??
Then bought a another soda.
I have a D610 and two lenses. For me it's easy. I don't need another camera.

Why Photography? The question is easier to answer with a picture rather than 1000 words.

Where? I'm not really sure. However, I'm enjoying the journey.

I started in 2002. We flew to San Diego to see my oldest son graduate MRCD. Then we went to Tijuana. I fell in love with photography then.

I was 10 years old in 1960. My Uncle returned from Germany with a 3 year old Leica M2. One day he loaded a roll of film and explained how to use it and sent me out and shoot the roll. He did this every time we visited. Everyone said how much his photos improved and when he would tell them that I took them they would say that is my calling. After a dozen rolls he finally gave me his camera and I never stopped. By the way I still have that camera and it still works as it did when I got it. Many CLAs and two leather changes. At this I’m setting at almost 350 cameras.

I shoot landscapes and travel as a way to show my love for my creator for giving me the ability to admire the beauty I see in the world around me.

In the 30's Roosevelt created work programs to build and create jobs.
The Federal Arts Project hired unemployed artists to decorate hundreds of post offices, schools and other public buildings with murals, canvases and sculptures. Art was all round all of us in NY.
My schools in New York had marvelous drawings, paintings and all kinds of art in my high school.
I enjoyed art in grade school and was one of those guys who draws.
Eventually I went to The School of Visual Arts in NY. Didnt finish couldnt afford finishing so I took a job as Asst. Art Director in ad agency. Got my first real camera in my early 20's. Took a lot of pictures. Never stopped. Wish we had digital imaging then it would have encourage my shooting more. Film cost money.
The great story is the camera's were easy to operate. I had a Pentax Spotmatic (?) The device was exciting.
Creative was in my mind and the environment in the big city was just right.
I think if any of us is in the right place, photography and art will be a part of our lives.
PS This is why I believe art is so important for young children and for all of us to have around our lives.
I have gone to Italy many times and it is everywhere you go. This influence is important.

I completely agree with you! I started photography because I thought I’d then draw/paint the images. Then I discovered that the photography is the art.

Exactly!! I can't draw, can't paint, can't sculpt, can't sing...but I can participate in art through a camera using my mind to produce beautiful images with a little help from technology.

Before retirement it was the money and the doors it opened for me. Now it's the AHA moments. My wife recently became interested in photography so it is a hobby we will share in retirement.

I suppose I have always wanted to be "Creative" in some aspect of my life, I start dabbling in Photography back in the 1970's after I got married, then got a Full time Job at FoMoCo, then we began our Family with 3 children, so over the years my Photography got to be just now & then, special occasions, etc. So, now my kids are all adults, I have 3 fantastic Grandchildren, and my Wife still loves me. Although now at 69 My health is creating issues that have my immediate attention, but a few years ago I Jumped into Digital Photography, buying my first DSLR, a Nikon D3300. I now have 5 Lens to go with my Camera. The internet and Smartphones have come into my life too. I hate Winter now, because I am old, but I do get to go to Florida in Winter for at least 1 month, have 2 of 3 children living there.
I have taken a keen interest in Landscape Photography, having been inspired by other Photographer's online, particularly one, named "Mark Denney", who has presented a very good teaching, explaining, suggesting, different aspects about Digital Landscape Photography. There are other Excellent Photographers that are very helpful right here on UHH. I appreciate all the Encouragement, suggestions, new ideas, corrections in my thinking, etc. Thanks to all here at UHH.
