Another Photo Raw 2020 question

I'm using PR2020 on my iMac 27" (early 2019 model) with 128 Gigs of RAM and a 2TB SSD. Normally PR2020 responds quickly on this rig but often when switching modes, say from Browse to Develop, it goes into the spinning beach ball mode and when I watch with Monitor all Monitor can tell me is that PR is not responding. In the fullness of time it suddenly completes whatever it's doing and returns control to let me continue processing. Anyone else using PR2020 having this problem (or not)? If so have you found a solution.

Obviously it's not hanging up on data retrieval or insufficient RAM. Originally I had 32 Gigs of RAM and saw the problem so I thought perhaps this new release of PR had some memory leaks and was churning because the OS didn't have enough available memory to meet all demands. Then I upgraded to 128 Gigs and Monitor shows me that I've got plenty of memory capacity beyond what PR is demanding in either virtual or real space. I did see lots of disk i/o going on so thought maybe disk i/o was a bottleneck so I upgraded my Fusion drive by replacing the spinner with an SSD and everything speeded up but I'm still encountering the spinning beach ball hang too often (but not always) when switching modes. I've tried killing all other apps but the problem still appears.

Sounds like it’s an app problem, not the computer.
Things slow down for me when an app is downloading something (like an update) in the background and I’m trying to work!

What is "PR2020"?

On edit... Never mind my question. It apparently has to do with ON1.

I had a similar issue with ON1 PR 2019.5. Eventually, I had to replace my graphics board with something more robust, i.e. one with more memory since PR is a heavy user. However, to verify the suspicion, ON1 tech support pointed me to a support page on their website that had a procedure for a clean uninstall and then reinstall. Note that the process requires removal of everything including presets that don’t get removed during a normal uninstall. Then a system scrub to get rid of remnants.

I was having this problem regularly and tech people at On1 suggested turning the computer off — totally shutting down for a few minutes and then restarting. Something about caches needing to be cleaned out/reset. Anyway, it helped tremendously— also made brushes work smoother. This is usually a first thing to try when problems occur, but I know I forget to do it sometime.

Do you use On1 photo raw 2020 as a standalone or via a plugin to your normal processing program?

Thanks JSF Photos. I'll try that next time it happens and let you know if it works. "Clearing caches" sounds to me like they've got some memory leaks. That's why I upgraded from 32 gigs to 128 gigs of RAM and I see PR using 40+ gigs of virtual RAM space with real usage at around 30 gigs. No way they could need that much memory so if I were on their debug team I'd look first for memory leaks that gradually eat into OS allocations of memory for an app like PR. The trick of turning off the computer does reset all OS memory available tables but doesn't cure the fundamental problem so I would expect it to keep coming back. What happened in your case?

No wonder my measly 16 GB machine won't run On1 successfully. It seems 128 gigs isn't even enough. I'm not an On1 fan.

16gb is plenty on a PC and should be in a Mac as well. My suspicion is something other than memory, hence the suggestion to check the OP's graphic processor setup or tho reinstall. I have ON1 PR 2020 and also the 2 previous versions. I'll admit to not being totally satisfied with their releases in the past and thus found versions buggy and not ready for prime time. So, I can appreciate your lack of love.

I use it pretty much as a stand alone, alternating with Luminar. I prefer the organizing capabilities of On1 -- the not needing to catalog as in LR.

I'm on a 3-year old MacBook Pro with 16G and apart from the problem of stalling with rotating beachball and sticky brushes about six months ago, it is working pretty well. That was also th 2019 version. I had my issues with Photo Raw a few years ago, but I think it gets way better with each new release and I'm pretty happy with PR2020. It helps that they have cleaned up their interface and I'm getting a lot more proficient with using the software.

It's interesting to me that subscription Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop run flawlessly on my current computer while On1 2019 almost doesn't work at all. I asked for help from On1, received some suggestions and applied those suggestions without much difference. I had always heard that the Adobe CC package was a resource hog but it doesn't come close to what On1 demands. And besides that, they keep asking me for more money for (it is claimed) new and better updated versions (ie. Photo Raw 2020).

The behavior sounds more like a memory leak than anything else. That could include poor application managed memory cache management (not system managed cache) - e.g. ever more things are put into cache but unused or dropped items in cache aren't purged or purged quickly enough. This error is more common that you'd think - there should be a garbage collector task in background doing managing cache usage but often it isn't running.
