Lightroom: The metadata for this photo has been changed by another application. Should Lightroom import settings from disk or overwrite disk settings with those from the catalog?

I get this message when I open up an image in Lightroom that has been manipulated in Photoshop first. It seems to me that Photoshop is changing the original image and that impacts going forward what "Lightroom" has to work with.

I've recently opened images in PS first, to do some major "background swaps" and then exporting out of PS as a TIF file copy (without the needless layers). Then, when I go to LR, the original Raw file has the pop-up message. I'm confused to say the least....

I guess I'm trying to ask, Who's on 1st and What's on 2nd 'cause I Don't Know 3rd.

Thanks
J

See attached on metadata. The LR help manual explains what metadata is. Simply click on yes and the metadata from whatever program you were using will be saved to the file in LR, so it is simply asking you if you want the metadata to be updated to reflect the changes made in a different program.

I believe if you begin in LR and then choose "Edit in Photoshop CC," you won't get that message when you return to LR.

When the image is imported into LR, the file attributes are imported into the LR catalog aka database. If you modify the file external to LR, you will receive this warning from LR, who can detect the file is no longer exactly the same as initially imported.

As explained in the earlier responses, if you launch PS as an external editor from LR, you will not receive this message. Be sure to review your external editor definitions of PS from LR to assure you pass the file in a format, bit-depth and colorspace as appropriate to your needs when sharing the files between the two applications.

You are right about the non-issue when the image is edited over into PS & then brought back...

So in regards to your first paragraph... When the pop-up occurs, should I Over-write or not?

I've not read your attachment yet... I will when I'm on my computer.... Thanks!

So by Overwriting..the LR Metadata with the PA info, are there any drawbacks to that selection?

Thank!

No, the software simply updates your metadata for that particular file. When working with external editors, if possible, it is best practice to go from LR to that external editor. If done this way, everything gets updated in process. When importing a file that you changed in an external editor you can also simply so a "save." Yes, there is a Save in LR, but it only saves the metadata so that everything is updated.

The one issue I've countered is your keywords on the image are discarded when your overwrite the metadata from disk. If these exist and are important to you (and maybe difficult to recreate), just select the values and copy into memory, update the metadata, and then paste the keywords back onto the image from memory.

Ahhh thanks..... I quit using keywords long ago... I found out the hard way that they follow the photo forever! .. My first thought was the keywords helped me sort through my catalog.... Errrr, but they follow forever it seems

Thanks for the info & add to the conversation!

You can export without the keywords. I've never lost a keyword overwriting data from another program.
