Canon Shutter Problem

I own the Canon 6D I keep up with an accurate Click Count by maintaining a continuous Folder Numbering System. Even though I reformat my cards, I create new folders to stay in sequence. Under this system, I know I have over 162,000 clicks on my camera.

So, I am not totally surprised that I am having a shutter issue, but I'm wondering if anyone has seen this before??

When shooting extreme HIGH ISO and natural light, I get the light band in the middle of the image.

When shooting low ISO and with strobes, I do not get the band. I suspect the band of light is there, but it may be so minute, it can't be detected.

The dark band always shows up, but again, without any consistency.

Ideas, speculation or 1st hand knowledge would be appreciated. If you have first hand knowledge, how is this issue described when calling into Canon and what cost may I be facing?

Thanks!

J

I have a used 7D that had less than 19K on it, but had a bad shutter. Everything was darker than it should've been at 1/3200, and completely black at 1/4000 and 1/8000. Canon said the shutter was shorted, and replaced it. The cost was around $250, but since it was within the first 30 days of purchase, the store had to eat it.

That doesn't even look like a shutter issue, though, at least not one that I'm familiar with. I would think a shutter would produce a straight line, not one that's shaped like a triangle. Not sure what to make of it. Hopefully, someone else has seen this before.

I had this problem with canon rebel, company Nikon’s, a friend canon 20D. Cameras last just a certain amount of usage, no matter what brand. The company I shoot for they got after every season the cameras checked but even they gave up and brought new body’s in.

The Canon 6D is rated at 100,000 shutter clicks. It has a real world lifespan of 127,000 shutter clicks. However, there are always some exceptions, where more are achieved. Depending on the camera, a shutter replacement can cost between $300-$450. Two photographers I knew, who had shutter replacements, one a Sony crop sensor SLT camera, the other a Canon 5D Mark 2. They said the shutter just froze at the moment. No warning. Causing confusion, as to what really was wrong with the camera, at first. I never had a shutter failure. Not yet. That is why, if you buy a used Canon or Nikon camera, it is best to check for Gray Market, and get the shutter count clicks. Canon will repair gray market cameras, so long as you pay out of your pocket. Nikon USA will not do so.

The dark band looks like of could be shutter bounce.

My guess the thing is worn out.
How many clicks do people get out of a good quality camera?
Anyone have a guess?
162k sounds like a lot though.

Agreed if it is a mechanical shutter.
Could this happen with an electronic shutter?

These are good responses... Thank you. Still hoping to find that one Photographer that can confirm there's a simple inexpensive fix.

Any ideas why the light band disappears under strobe lighting & low ISO?

Maybe I can write Canon w attached photos??

Have you tested using Live View and see if the same result happens...

This is obviously some sort of shutter problem. I assume the reason it doesn’t show with strobe is the flash only fires when the shutter is wide open and there isn’t enough ambient light to register the odd streak.

I called Canon today. Always great support

They sent me a link that allowed me to upload the three images I've included here and the tech on the phone said, he'd never seen the white flash of light but felt like it was probably a reflection.

Canon has three levels of maintenance. You have a minor, standard, and major at $139, $349 and $539. There's no guarantee until they actually open up the camera but he felt that a Shutter replacement would be in the standard repair category.

I asked about having the autofocus system for the 5D Mark 4 installed while they're working the camera buuut.... that's not going to happen.....

Thanks for everyones input!
