A friend submitted an otherwise desirable collection of jpg photos to a non-profit archive only to have them rejected because of issues with jpg: The archive said that each time a jpg photo is opened, data is lost, with the final result the disappearance of the file. So the archive accepts no jpg materials. I'd never heard this before, but wonder!

Complete nonsense. The JPEG format is, as described in the documentation that defines it, an archive format. No data is lost when a JPEG is opened for viewing.

Whoever created the archive should take some lessons to learn about what he/she is doing.

Someone is terribly misguided!

A JPEG does not change unless you SAVE it.

Files can be locked.

JPEGs can be converted to TIFFs for minimal loss editing.

VIEWING has no affect on a JPEG file whatsoever.

Based on your comment and with really know the host of this company, I get the impression "they" want the RAW images and in turn not give the photographer the rights or credit he or she deserves. I would avoid this scam.

This is even funny, imagine any JPG posted on any webpage..........it would be degrading with each visitor to a website, ending with no image after some visits :-D

I cannot believe that they want 'raw' files - by definition 'raw' is incomplete and waiting to be 'finished'.

More likely someone sold them a 'bill of goods' and they expect TIFF.

I find it interesting that people running an archive don't know much about preservation and "wear." You don't wear out a picture bu looking at it.

It's editing and re-saving the picture that can cause a loss of quality. As an experiment, I opened, modified, and saved a JPEG picture over a hundred times. I didn't see any loss in quality.

Don't be so quick to say no. There could be some force at work here we don't understand. Every time I look in the mirror, for example, I seem to have less hair! That archivist might be on to something!
