I spent this weekend, along with hundreds of others lining the tracks, in California's Cajon Pass and on the High Desert near Barstow photographing the UP 4015 Big Boy, its tenders and two desels UP 4072, UP 2551, support cars and 23 passenger cars filled with a reported 600 passengers from Colton, California to Barstow on Saturday and on the return to Colton and Los Angeles on Sunday. Here are a few of my images.

Please correct your posting The Engine is "The Big Boy UP4014". While you and others lined the tracks, the Wife and I rode the train from Barstow to Colton and waved to many who lined the tracks. I took photos from inside and will post some soon. What a fantastic and fun trip!!

Don't sweat the small stuff. We all know what you meant.

My wife and son also did the bus up to Barstow and the train back. They had seats upstairs in a dome car. I haven't downloaded their images yet. She wants me to teach her how to do it and how to edit but today she didn't feel well. They had her Canon SX 50 and a Panasonic Camcorder. Both light and small and didn't aggravate her neck problem like her T6s and zoom lenses hanging off her neck would. I need to get her a load bearing photographer's vest to protect her neck.

I know the 4014 is special and a steamer but I recommend you visit the Southern California Railway Museum (aka Orange Empire Railway Museum) in Perris. We have a fully restored UP E8-A (#942) and a complete restored passenger consist in our collection. From time to time we put it together for weekend or holiday operations and the annual UP Employees Picnic. We have even used 942 for the Thomas festival in the past it was the power for the Percy train. For several years now we have two trains, Thomas & his buddy Percy. (twice a year, next is Nov 2, 3, 9, 10 & 11). In the past I have done the announcing all day the whole festival, this year they got another guy to help so I can have some break time and get to see and photograph something besides the Yard Master's office.

Yes Robert, I have been to the Orange Empire Railway Museum before and it is a very interesting place.

Thanks for sharing. The 4014 is an impressive engine. Not surprising that this area has been discovered by photographers. Years ago, I did quite a bit of photo work in the area and rarely saw any other photographers. Believe it or not, engineers even had their cab windows open--and waved.

For more than a year, along with a student of mine who has a 4X4 F250, have been exploring the Cajon Pass and scouting dozens of photo locations. In planning this shoot, we first considered Sullivan's Curve, but ultimately decided against that location because of the lighting at the times that we anticipated that the train would pass and also due to the expected crowds and railroad police activity. We ultimately picked the area near milepost 57 just below Summit because it provided direct sunlight on the train on both the west to east and east to west passes of the train and the availability of parking places on non-railroad right of way land.

Anxiously waiting the 4014's arrival at the UP Roseville yard. No date yet. Will keep checking.

Yes, very nice. I had thought of shooting it in the Cajon Pass but only being familiar with it in detail from the I-15 FRWY and not knowing it or the RR tracks via the side streets and dirt roads I passed on that idea and decided on an area I know well, the Banning Pass. So I planned a shoot for October 15, 2019.

The takeaway for the future is to consider where the sun will be before you pick your spot. Photography is all about using light to your advantage.

They don't necessary wave, but if you give them the whistle signal (pumping your arm up and down) they will often blow their horn for you.
