The odd thing was FDR did not want memorials like that. To my father and mother FDR of the 1930s was god. Let us not forget Eleanor.

Thank you for the lovely comments. FDR's humility was the reason for the simpler original memorial. As you suggested, Eleanor was a very active First Lady and played a significant part in the political life of her day. She was also the first US Ambassador to the United Nations.

G-B can leave the patient with no disability, with some ankle or hip instability, with hemi-paresis (like FDR) or, worst case, ventilator dependence for life. Younger victims do better than older, as you might expect. G-B is very poorly understood. The most famous occurences followed the Swine Flu vaccine during Carter's presidency. The vaccine was withdrawn after an unusual number of cases of G-B occurred (G-B sometimes follows vaccination for viral ills, or a cold or flu).

He was a great individual and his words still ring-truth. Thank you for showing me this place. It is wonderfully done and a welcome tribute to the man , his wife and even his dog.

I'm very glad you enjoyed this visit, Blair. The memorial is very tastefully done. When you study more about it, there is significance to many aspects of the design.

The original plans did not include showing FDR in his wheelchair, but out cry from advocates for the disabled
caused the designer/s to add the seated statue of him in the chair. His aides (in fact the whole government apparatus) went to huge lengths to conceal his disability from the public. And, did you know that it is now thought that FDR did not have polio but had Gillain-Barre syndrome?

Thank you, Nancy. I knew his condition was kept secret as much as possible and that the wheel chair statue was the result of outcry. I always though his condition was the result of Polio but I guess we learn more with time.

I should add that the photos are very fine and show each section well. It's a grand monument, worth a long stroll and contemplation.

I've been there twice. I didn't even see the inscriptions on the walls. I was't inspired by the design and artwork and to me it seemed a little sparse for a four term president who led us thru war and depression.

I can easily see why that would be a first impression. There is a lot of open space. However, there is meaning to many aspect of the design and I had read about it in advance. This was also my second visit. The four rooms represent his four terms as president and the size and nature of the water features in each room coincides with significant aspects of each term. There are many more quotes that what I have shown and more sculptures. Because Roosevelt was a supporter of National Parks, I think he might have approved of the park like design.

Thank you, Nancy. I try hard to compose shots that provide meaning so I really appreciate your comment.

Re exacta56: other comments reflect contributors' thoughts regarding the veracity of FDR's thoughts writ in stone. Your comment reflects your opinion of Trump - opinions that are strongly disputed by millions of your fellow Americans. Why not relax for a moment and consider FDR's quotes, leaving your thoughts about current political issues for another place and time? We are sorely in need of cooperation and fellowship these days; there is ample finger pointing and name calling from both sides.

This post is not intended to be a political comment and I do not want that to become a topic. Roosevelt was an outstanding leader and deserves to be honored. I do think everyone in politics would do well to contemplate his message, regardless of political party.

Those of us not in politics could learn from him also.
