The second memorial should be the location for the swearing into office, not some spectacular podium at the steps of the Capitol building.
Memorials are built by those who live beyond the one being honored. The second one is a fitting one for a compassionate and understanding man.
Thank you for your presentation.

I included the original memorial because it seemed to say a lot about Roosevelt and added to my appreciation of the later memorial.

And you are incorrect--sorry. The comment about the present had nothing to do with the photograph.

As it is your right to opine. But, as you contended, to comment in another folder.

My personal preference is to participate in the conversation around and about the shots in particular. (To which I return.)

Very nice set and narrative Carol - thanks for sharing!

Thank you, Bill. One thing I love about Washington is that I learn a lot with each visit.

Outstanding post ... I wish more people would read & adhere to the advice re: working cooperatively. Thanks for sharing. And I too, appreciated your narrative.

Thank you so much. I photographed many of the quotes because I wanted to remember them. I was hesitant to post them because I didn’t know if others would find them as moving as I did. Now I’m glad did.

Very nice. I was there not long after that exhibit opened. I also live just a few miles from his home in Hyde Park, NY.

Thank you, Jerry. As you probably remember, the area is shaded and has some beautiful views of the areas beyond the tidal basin including the Washington Monument. Is his home preserved and open to the public?

Very good images. The trouble with this memorial is that not many people stop to read FDR's words. you did a good job of photographing them.
Rich...

Thank you! This is next door to the MLK, Jr. Memorial which also has a number of very moving quotes. I was quite inspired by the time we left the area.

Words well worth reading.

Thank you! I think it does us all good to be reminded at times.

Carol, thanks for sharing these images with everyone. The last time we were in DC we visited all the memorials and were greatly surprised and impressed by this one. I agree everyone should visit and read many of his quotes.

Thank you, Rowedean. It is impressive. There is so much granite I’m surprised the whole area isn’t sinking. (Maybe it is.). If it weren’t for the crowds I would love to be there when the cherry trees are in bloom.

The odd thing was FDR did not want memorials like that. To my father and mother FDR of the 1930s was god. Let us not forget Eleanor.

In September 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt called his friend, Supreme Court Justice Frankfurter, to the White House and asked the Justice to remember the wish that he was about to share:

"If any memorial is erected to me, I know exactly what I should like it to be. I should like it to consist of a block about the size of this (putting his hand on his desk) and placed in the center of that green plot in front of the Archives Building. I don't care what it is made of, whether limestone or granite or whatnot, but I want it plain without any ornamentation, with the simple carving, 'In Memory of ____'."

In 1965 the original memorial was dedicated as shown below.

The second memorial, on the Tidal Basin, was dedicated in 1997. It is spread out over 7 1/2 acres and consists of four outdoor rooms representing Roosevelt's four terms in office. There are sculptures, water features and many quotations. I've included just a few of the quotations. I think it would be good if everyone in government was required to visit this memorial and carefully read all the quotations.

He was a great individual and his words still ring-truth. Thank you for showing me this place. It is wonderfully done and a welcome tribute to the man , his wife and even his dog.

The original plans did not include showing FDR in his wheelchair, but out cry from advocates for the disabled
caused the designer/s to add the seated statue of him in the chair. His aides (in fact the whole government apparatus) went to huge lengths to conceal his disability from the public. And, did you know that it is now thought that FDR did not have polio but had Gillain-Barre syndrome?

I've been there twice. I didn't even see the inscriptions on the walls. I was't inspired by the design and artwork and to me it seemed a little sparse for a four term president who led us thru war and depression.

Good point. I know someone who has Gillain-Barre Syndrome and she has told me she at times have a very hard time to get around.
