In September 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt called his friend, Supreme Court Justice Frankfurter, to the White House and asked the Justice to remember the wish that he was about to share:

"If any memorial is erected to me, I know exactly what I should like it to be. I should like it to consist of a block about the size of this (putting his hand on his desk) and placed in the center of that green plot in front of the Archives Building. I don't care what it is made of, whether limestone or granite or whatnot, but I want it plain without any ornamentation, with the simple carving, 'In Memory of ____'."

In 1965 the original memorial was dedicated as shown below.

The second memorial, on the Tidal Basin, was dedicated in 1997. It is spread out over 7 1/2 acres and consists of four outdoor rooms representing Roosevelt's four terms in office. There are sculptures, water features and many quotations. I've included just a few of the quotations. I think it would be good if everyone in government was required to visit this memorial and carefully read all the quotations.

Thank you, Ken. It is an inspiring place if you take time to really explore. There are other statues and water features to enjoy.

A worthy memorial to a great American president. ‘Sic transit Gloria mundi’.

FDR's statements as literally 'cut in stone' are sadly unknown to Donald Trump. Our leadership has sunk so terribly far from Roosevelt's.

Carol, a fantastic set and the "Quotations" are all fantastic. I agree with you that all the people who work in the goverment should read them.

The second memorial should be the location for the swearing into office, not some spectacular podium at the steps of the Capitol building.

Memorials are built by those who live beyond the one being honored. The second one is a fitting one for a compassionate and understanding man.

Thank you for your presentation.
