Building Tops

As we drove along W Cermak Road (Cicero and Berwyn in Chicago), my daughter commented that the contrasting and disconcerting store fronts and buildings create a feeling of dissonance, lack of architectural harmony, and a lack of respect for their original design.

I suggested that she look at the tops of the buildings, above the contrasting signage, awnings, mangled storefronts.

Here's some examples (more to come as I have time to take more and avoid the traffic ...):

As a developer and urbanist, I find the destruction of first floor storefronts one of the ugliest aspects of today’s cities. Fortunately, many are being made more “period” and more uniform in buildings rehabbed with historic tax credits. National Park Service approval of facade work is one of the requirements. Most developers today wouldn’t think of allowing that H&R Block design on anything in their portfolios, and many cities wouldn’t permit it.

These are really nice shots. Great concept for photographers at all levels.

Branding meets Architecture, taste and good design. As lucrative as branding can be, it is the lower order suit that must be preempted by the others.
