Hello,

I have a photo that was not taken by me and it is in what I think to be really large format (5472 x 3648 pixels). I have never been good with sizing and ratios with photography and I have a very old copy of Photoshop 7 and would like to make it into a 5x7 portrait.

Can someone explain to me how to achieve this and keep the perspective the same?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You really can't, it either has to be squished on one side, expanded on one side, or cropped to alter the aspect rato.

I am not against cropping, but after cropping how can it be stretched to look normal. Again, I do not do well with aspect ratios so I need the ABC's of how to do it.

It will have to be cropped, meaning that some of the original must be discarded. The perspective will remain the same regardless of how much is cropped off. If you just try to squish it in it won't look right at all.

Without seeing it (and being able to download it) I don't know if you can crop the photo to 5x7 in a portrait mode.

Your best bet is to take the file to a professional lab and ask them to do the 5x7. While there they can show you not only the new perspective but how the actual photograph will look like.

It depends on your editor...
On one of mine, I can go to the crop function, set the aspect ratio to (5x7) and crop box orientation (landscape/portrait), lock it, move/adjust the crop box (expand/contract/move) and hit enter. Always "save as" to preserve the original in case you want to do something different later.

EDIT:
Your pixel dimensions are a 1.5 (.6666) aspect ratio, like for 8x12, 4x6, 2x3.
a 5x7 is 1.4 (.7142) aspect ratio. (5x1.4=7)

About the only way is to crop it into 3 sections (or however many works). Then print each section. It would then be easy to frame each section, and display side by side by side (particularly effective if done on canvas).
Or crop out just the section/part you want. The 5x7 is going to be VERY limiting as to what you can do!

Can you send a copy in (don't forget to check the box "[] Store Original") so we can get a better idea of the situation. Someone on UHH may be able to re-size it for you.

The below is 5x7 landscape. Ignore the pixels and simply use the crop tool. But, can you talk about why you wish to print this in portrait orientation?

If the portrait idea is not debatable, see a few ideas in this thread:

@Linda. I am putting the picture in a frame with medals and the only option for this frame is 5 x 7. I could choose another frame, but that will wipe out all my work on the medal portion.

The option to add a title bar is a good idea as I was going to put a card or something with her name and date on it. I will try that and see what I can do as well.

@Longshadow. Can you explain how you cropped to 5 x 7? I guess my PS v7 edition is too old to see what I am cropping to OR I just do not have that view enabled to see it.

Thanks also.
