Swing railroad bridge. In the closed position it allows for trains to cross and opens when river traffic needs to pass. We passed through it on a recent riverboat trip.

It connects Dubuque IA with East Dubuque IL on the Mississippi river.

There is also a swing bridge on the Hudson River at Albany. I will check my archive to see if I have any shots of it, but I doubt it since I’ve only taken one or two boat rides that require the bridge to be open.

Wow that is interesting and impressive engineering. Imagine the bearings at the bottom? The motor drive? And accuracy of alignment is important.
